[cma-l] Question about Classical Music Show

I’d recommend that you find someone local to present your classical show. Nick’s right in that it won’t be for everyone so it’s an ‘appointment to listen’ for those who are interested. A local presenter is more likely to know about classical concerts, recitals, music clubs etc in your area. They will know where to look to find musicians or experts who might come in for an interview. There’s bound to be an Arts body who will have a list of interesting groups, bands, choirs etc and I’m sure they’d be willing to help you find someone who you can train. I’d take a similar approach with any targeted music show – Jazz, Blues, Punk, Rock.

I think you will find that you’ll get more listener engagement this way, rather than syndicating. Local knowledge is what starts conversations, builds audience and attracts revenue!

Good luck!

Observation on this one chaps.

We have run with Classical Shows in our early days plus Rock Shows ….. however, we noticed that Rock folk tend to think in a similar vane to the classical people …. They know what they like and like what they know, so if your promotions are good you will grab em (for an hour) then they tootle off back to where they came from. If you don’t keep pecking away and promoting it, they never come back end result one man and his Dog. The BIGGER end result is that your bread and butter regulars also go walkies with them, so you turn more away than you attract. The dedicated choicew of plenty of Rock Stations and Classic FM, normally does the trick for these people ….remember, these guys in the main don’t even Station surf so you do have to right on your game.

If you guys have managed to get a grant of £200,000 over 3 years then it doesn’t really matter who listens to you (if anybody) so you could have a full-day on a Tuesday every Tuesday dedicated to Morris Dancing music, Pan Pipes and Zulu war chants, however, in the real World it ain’t like that and we are chasing listeners as well as trying to tick 15 other boxes and run around like headless chickens. Regardless of the Utopia and idea of Community Radio it is at the end of the day ‘’’Radio’’’

The counter argument is that we are to try and include everyone ………well WE (Canalside) do it by including Rock / Classical into shows where it doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb, and drifts past sometimes either unnoticed or as a complimentary element.

Of course, if you wish to have the show, by all means do it, it isn’t my call, all I am saying is be careful. My best advice would be to tell them to tune to Classic FM or run a special at Bank Holidays and/or Christmas / Easter we have done this before …… pre-promotion is essential though.

I’d be interested to know which ones of our gang of Community Stations do have a regular classical show ?? if I was a betting man, I would guess = 15% tops .. I could be wrong though.

Nick

We are looking at introducing a Classical Music Show into our programming output and wondered if there are any pre produced shows available OR if anyone can recommend a good, knowledge presenter that may wish to add to their portfolio.
