David n all
Actually, Im in it because I love working with young people, elderly
people, people with disabilities and I enjoy sharing my experiences and
passing on what knowledge I have (be it possibly limited in some areas)
however, I have been in radio a long time and decided with a few
others to set up a Community Radio Station for our area. One reason was
because I had got so brassed off with commercial radio and a lot of the
clots that have now invaded it ----- so in my opinion something needed to be
done for our area.
I worked 48 hours a week from 2004 till 2008 for NOWT
.. if I hadnt,
we wouldnt be here
.. others to volunteered to help set up our
venture. The all did about 6 hours each per-week.
My other job kept me going
I still do my other job (entertainment)
but when Canalside was in its infancy if you add up the total hours it was
peaking some weeks at 90 hours !
I now receive a wage as I co-ordinate what goes on here. It was done via a
vote and all above board
.. to be honest, if I hadnt have got the nod,
I would have been a touch brassed off
we have others here who
we NEED
and they need to be paid as they have homes to run. However,
having said all of this, the wages that we receive are buttons
but, lots of buttons do add up.
Now Id be interested where you get all your volunteers from ? when I say
volunteers, I mean real volunteers and not old Billy who turns up once a
week with his 60s records under his arm
plays what he likes, leaves the
studio a complete
..s
h
it hole and then
you dont see him again for a week !
Ive met many of these characters over the years and if hospital radio is
anything to go by the offices and studios wouldnt be fit to keep pigs in !
You guys have maybe got some magic formula ??? but
surely, there must be more people there who spend many more hours there than
old Billy
. They steer the ship and ensure that that there is at least some
kinda system to work to. You cant of course have chimps doing this or else
you will end up with a tea party.
If you do have a number of guys or gals there who do this??
. Perhaps
I could ask ? Who pays their mortgages ???
I could however be talking to a radio station that has a benefactor or
someone who runs the station because they own an offshore Bank and dont
need to work
bully for whoever I say.
To answer the question, I am NOT here for the wages
but, the amount of
hours I put in to ensure that everyone here enjoys what they do would make
me feel pretty miffed if I received nothing. Some of us by the way at the
moment are on reduced wages, but NOT reduced hours
.. in fact they have
gone up.
I wish all stations continued success whether or not they run on 75 grand /
50 grand / 5 grand or peanuts !
Regards
Nick

a day all for 5K a year yes you read that right 5k a year and we are not
going broke in fact we are now in year six.

We should be OK long term then ?? what am I saying ?? !
long term
.. the whole idea of my original comments was that long term
looks unlikely at the current rate of developments.
Nevermind
we soldier on with will power alone for now.

Nick

It may not be easy to sustain a station on much less than £50k total (though
we do), but bear in mind that grant and donation income, and wages
expenditure are 'non-business' items outside the scope of VAT, so don't
count towards the threshold, which is based on your supply of goods and
services to others in the course of business.
Wages are often the largest outgoing for a small community station. It is
quite possible to be running a station whose business outputs that are
within the scope of VAT are well below the threshold. Equally this is why it
is possible for such a station to be a net recipient of VAT repayment.
You are only forced to register for VAT if your supply of goods and services
by way of regular business exceeds £70,000 per annum, not your total
turnover or ocaasional activities not falling within the meaning of
business.

Jaqui n all
Hey ! I have spotted something here
of course the discussion is
about V.A.T.
and Jaqui mentions the extra admin and the hassle (we
should be all use to it by now anyway) but, the interesting fact is
this (as Rolf Harris would say have you guessed what it is yet?)
Jaqui mentions near the threshold or not my observation
is this
.. if you aint anywhere near the threshold and trust me
this last 12 months we have really slipped away from that threshold
may I ask the question ?
WHEN ARE YOU HOLDING YOUR CLOSING DOWN SALE ?
If you catch my drift?
How does anyone survive on less than at least fifty five grand
.. here
lies our problem
. We operated this year on about £48,000 and now we
are in the proverbial. We know the illnesses and the symptoms, but the DCMS
doctor wont prescribe any medicine
I think its a case of go and
have a lie down, youll be OK in a week or two
no we wont Mr Doctor
. Were dying !
Croak croak gulp gulp
.. Help !
Regards
