[cma-l] Radio Project supported by BBC WM for 16 to 19 yr olds to launch in Birmingham

Ulfah Arts, Birmingham is delivering unique media project in which  32 young
people aged 16 - 19 will  conceptualise, design, produce and broadcast the
pilot editions of a brand new youth oriented digital radio show - YOUTHOLOGY
to be aired on a number of radio stations as well as it¹s own online radio
site, The participants will be trained for three months in professional
radio production, sound mixing, and broadcasting assistance and training
from former BBC network Producer Prashant Singh and Radio DJ Tessa Burwood.
BBC WM is supporting the project and will give the participants an exclusive
chance to visit its facilities and meet BBC producers and presenters for
career guidance. The project base will be NewStyle Radio¹s professional
radio studios in Winson green, Birmingham.

THE PROJECT IS CURRENTLY OPEN TO ALL YOUNG PEOPLE IN WEST MIDLANDS AGED 16
TO 19 
 
 
Total participants: A total of 32 young people
 
Age group: 16 to 19
 
 
> The skills transfer will happen over a period of three months through 12 ,
four hour workshops. Each of the workshops will operate on a plain English
principle and will concentrate on specific skills. Following are the skills that
will be transferred:
 
CREATIVE SKILLS:  
- ConceptualIsing a radio feature
- Devising and developing a radio script
- Designing and scheduling a radio program with appropriate division of
light and heavy content
- Coming up with ideas for interviews or features, and discussing them with
colleagues
- Briefing the presenter on questions to ask
- Creating radio commercials and appropriate scripts
- Reading and responding to listeners' comments
- Designing and co-ordinating competitions, phone-ins and other interactive
features
- Maintaining a website for the show through WYSWYG (What You See What You
Get) website builders like Moonfruit
- Presenting items on air, especially on smaller stations.
- Mixing music samples digitally to produce original music.
 
TECHNICAL SKILLS
- The software: ADOBE Audition 3.0 - professional radio editing software
- The hardware: MYRIAD Radio play out and automation system.
- Using the desk: Explaining the controls and studio technique.
- Making radio: Their chance to practice what they've learnt, with
substantial hands-on studio time, on-location recording etc.
 
Once the training workshops are finished the young people will begin to
produce the two pilot episodes of Youthology, making decisions about
creative, technical and managerial issues of the project. Two expert media
professionals will be working closely with the young people, helping only
when they require help. The media professionals will also make sure that the
shy participants get an equal opportunity to make contribution in creative,
technical and managerial part of the project by encouraging them and giving
extra support if needed.
 
Upon completion of the project the Young People interested in broadcasting
the show as volunteer producers or presenters  will be able to do so till
August 2011, when the
 
> A certificate in Expressive Arts Award will be given to each participant
ACRREDIATED by ASDAN.
