*General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)*

We know that many community media projects are concerned about the data
protection changes that come into force later this month and how those
changes will affect their organisations.

The Community Media Association is preparing for the new regulations and we
explain more about it below.

*What is GDPR and why change from the Data Protection Act 1998?*

The GDPR will give EU citizens more control over how their personal data is
used. It will make it clearer for organisations to understand their data
protection requirements. However, it will also bring the possibility of
significant fines for those who ignore or break the rules. The GDPR is
already enshrined in UK law so there will not be any change after Brexit.

*How will the GDPR affect community media organisations?*

It can be challenging to understand how the changes affect your community
media organisation and the CMA recommends that you look at the Information
Commissioner’s Office (ICO) <https://ico.org.uk/> website. This is a good
source of information, has checklists that will help you to decide what
changes you need to make and a “12 steps to GDPR
<https://ico.org.uk/media/1624219/preparing-for-the-gdpr-12-steps.pdf>”
document to follow.

The CMA is keen to support our members and the wider community media sector
but as every organisation will store and process data differently, the CMA
is unable to offer specific guidance in response to individual requests for
assistance. The CMA also cannot offer specific legal advice as each
organisation will be responsible in law for its own compliance.

However, the CMA encourages you to look at the ICO website, follow the
steps it offers and work together within your organisation to ensure that
you are ready when the law changes on 25 May 2018. The National Council for
Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) also has a very comprehensive set of
resources
<https://www.ncvo.org.uk/practical-support/information/data-protection>
that you could use to guide you.

*The CMA and your data*

We take your privacy seriously. We are working hard to prepare for the new
regulations and, in order to comply with them, we will need you to update
your preferences. We will be giving you updates across our communications
channels over the coming weeks so please look out for them.
