The Carton at the other end of the string is fine and dandy, it’s the one the Tower that’s melted, so any donations are welcome and not expensive as we only need to replace one.

We are thinking of going for a bigger audience though and better technology …. I know the Industry is on Multiplex DAB trials at the moment, our next step is the trial for the new all singing all dancing ‘Walkie Talkie’

On another note, how is the wonderful News Service going on ?   are all the Fayzil Islams and Laura Kuensbergs in place now and ready for action ?

Obviously some may argue that we’re not signed up to it so what the hell ……. But alas, it’s mine and your money they are using, and without permission as well.

Just a thought, that’s all. The mind boggles ………. £8 Million at the drop of a Hat for this and at the other end of the scale a Community Radio Fund of £495,000 in 2008 for 100 Stations which is now £300,000 for nearly 300 Stations and restrictions still in place.

These rules must have, they must have must have must have been thought up and written by either someone who has taken leave of their senses or a Chimpanzee. My worry is that this statement is possibly not quite right as the Chimpanzee would do a better job

We’ve never found cold weather a problem, though we don’t get much sub-zero weather here. The self-generated heat inside equipment tends to keep it fairly snug even if the cabin is Icelandic.

A bigger threat is warm days and cold nights leading to condensation and corrosion, but again the tends to affect surrounding metalwork more than the equipment itself as the equipment generally keeps itself warm enough to avoid condensation except on od bits of exposed metalwork.

If you’d like to set up a crowdfunding page for a new yoghurt carton, I’d be happy to chip in a few pence, by the way.

Dear All

We noticed yesterday that our Ski Yogurt Carton had melted and the piece of string had dried out and curled up …… fortunately it didn’t affect our ability to just about manage to reach Macclesfield   😊

Good advice though, it can get hot in those Towers and Turrets …………. certainly in ours you can fry eggs on the palm of your hand when you are up there.

On a serious note, can ‘cold’ weather affect the kit ?     ie:- really cold ?   as in Brass Monkey Weather ?      I have been up in our Tower in the middle of December on a few occasions, last time was just before Chrimbo and Blackers and Moi came down with Hypothermia

I second Ian's warning as we had a problem the other day. During the early hours of monday morning there was a sudden drop in modulation level and a definite reduction in audio quality of the output of the station. Checking the 1.5GHz link output cleared the studio of any problem so a trip to the transmitter site was necessary fearing the worst of a major item failure. Whilst monitoring the relative components of the VHF output and swinging out the wall mounted cabinet everything returned to normal so we concluded it was a connection problem and checking around it was found the baseband feed from the link receiver to transmitter had an un-locked BNC plug which was duly secured. We can only guess that expansion/contraction of the loose plug had eventually produced the intermittency but it was a sobering experience.

We've had to deal with four in the last two weeks that had overheated.

Pay it a visit - take a vacuum cleaner with you - and suck out the dust and fluff from the vents at the front and the fans at the back.

Check that they're working and check the PA temperature.

A bit cheaper than going off air - and having to find £2500 for a new one?
