[cma-l] Digital radio event in Glasgow - 23rd February

I’ve really mixed feelings about this. I totally support the suggestion that organisations who already operate national and local multiplexes should be excluded from participating in SSDAB, as this means that we won’t see a myriad of small local platforms offering variations on the current (already available) national brands. This should be the path to digital for community and small scale stations, as well as an opportunity new commercial outlets. However, I’m less convinced that a wholly ‘not for profit’ criteria will either make it through parliament or be of interest to potential operators. I’m sure there will be CR stations willing to give it a go, and perhaps a few technically minded experts who can roll their salary into the running costs and do a rather fine job; but should the criteria more be about an affordable and transparent cost with a nationally set framework or rate card?

By the way, I’m hoping to get to the Glasgow event – is there a web link for it anywhere?

Best wishes

Richard

In principle, not for profit SSDAB would only work for stations looking to fund their own carriage or offset costs from others.

However, while there may be a business case for providing additional and / or high quality stereo services to fill the available multiplex space, I suspect that much capacity would go unused.

There seems zero incentive to own a multiplex without being on it and who in their right mind would want competing services on their multiplex?

I think a better model is revenue sharing after providing mandatory free access say on a third of the bandwidth.

Kind Regards
Alan

Not only interesting but potentially of great importance!

At the AGM I argued it was critical that if community radio had to migrate to DAB that the multiplex they were on should owned by the community radio stations on it and could then be used as a source of income generation (by ‘renting’ space to commercial operators.

I’m not sure that ‘multiplex are to be provided on a non-commercial basis’ is exactly saying but it goes a long way towards it.

Richard

Hi david,

I hadnt seen the bill had been published thank you ever so much for that.

A quick read shows the following points:

1. any person who has an interest in a national or local multiplex is disqualified to hold a SSDAB multiplex license
2. multiplex are to be provided on a non-commercial basis
3. provide capacity reserved for community radio

All very interesting!

Hi Martin

At this stage many of the participants in the trial(s) are ‘not-for-profit’. Probably not intentionally!

I’m not sure if everyone in this place is aware of this http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/cbill/2016-2017/0028/17028.pdf

Probably worth digesting this and it’s implications before commenting. Give me a day! I’m not 100% behind the wording in this.

David,

It would be great to get your insight into what might be the barriers for community radio?

Also do you have any services that are "not for profit" so community radio but not an existing CR license holder?

Hi Nick

We missed you at the Manchester event. But great to see all the other stations that did make the effort to attend.

I can only speak for the Manchester ‘trial’ and it is going well, thank you. 18 stations currently: 14 DAB+ and 4 DAB; with 3 more joining imminently.

It’s a real shame that there are only 3 community radio stations onboard - Gaydio; Unity; and Heritage . I have a feeling this will be replicated across the country and that minimuxes may not be the alternative digital home for community radio that the DCMS is hoping it will be.

This should be a sell out ……………. Glasgow is a bit nearer to Norway than Manchester ☺ with FM now gone bon yoyage expect to see lots of people in attendance adorning Helmets with Horns on them

LOL

By the way do we have an update on these DAB ‘’’trials’’’ are they going OK or are there teething problems at the moment ???

Following the success of the last digital radio event in Manchester<http://radiotoday.co.uk/2016/12/dab-digital-radio-celebrated-in-manchester/>, Digital Radio UK is organising another digital radio event in Glasgow!

Thursday 23 February, 6-8pm (time tbc)
29 Glasgow, Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow

All community radio stations in the area and beyond are invited.

This event is definitely worth attending for anybody interested in the development of digital radio in the UK.
