[cma-l] Community Radio Awards

So that we are all clear on this chaps and ladies ----------Conference ought
to be about passing amendments and getting mandates and backing for
‘’’whatever actions’’’ are needed.

Of course time needs to be set aside for celebrating what we do & having a
bit of networking and a chinwag or two but I believe we have gone slightly
off-piste hence why people aren’t talking to each other, folk are going off
at tangents and we seem slightly disorganised .. when actually, in reality
we’re not.

We need to work out who is doing what, and most importantly ‘when?’
Campaigning and Representation is now very key if we want to move our
fraternity forward. We have come along way but more work awaits. With the
final hurdles jumped over or better still knocked down ! we will achieve
lots more.

On a personal note, I don’t go to meetings, events and/or Conference to keep
listening to Commercial Radio wallers or BBC Big-wigs who ran Radio 3 20
years ago waffling on about things that don’t interest me, don’t help our
cause and confirming that actually they haven’t half a clue about what we
do.

We’re not interested in Commercial Radio or the BBC, I also do not wish to
learn anything from them. Give me warts n’ all anytime above prim and
proper.

If you want proof of this statement in some zones Commercial Radio has moved
closer to us than we have to them. It then gets highlighted that there is
too much of a ‘crossover’

it’s not our fault, we haven’t moved, we’re
merely doing what we are meant to be doing.

These guys can learn as much from us as we can from them. So, if we’ve got
another ruck being rolled out at Conference in September, can we cancel them
please as we’ve more important matters to deal with. I also don’t really
want to be listening to people who have been bullying us for the past 14
years.

At Conference I wish to hear from Martin / Lucinda / Bill / Dom / Phil and
of course some of our folk who have deservedly won awards. It’s the CMA
Conference not the General Radio Mutual Admiration Conference. Also, if we
are wheeling out any Government people then they need to be there to listen
to our concerns and questions and have a quick half an hour debate

not us
sitting there like lap Dogs for an hour whilst they tell us everything we
already know and when we get to the end of the Lollipop we’ve run out of
time for questions (sounds familiar ?) and or they’ve exited the Stage
faster than you can say ‘’Jack Robinson’’ because they have a Train to
catch.

I once again repeat, I am not bringing up these matters for reasons of
having a pop at anyone (Government included lol) I am doing it on
behalf of all of us so that as a team we rid ourselves of the issues and we
flourish in a manner that we all deserve.

Just doing my bit, that’s all. I have long gone past the point of worrying
whether I am bad cop
..

We have also received a number of very interesting correspondence from our
local MP David Rutley and direct from Ed Vaizey himself. The big big big
question (yes that one) still awaits. I currently have both David and Ed in
a half nelson headlock and twin leg pincer movement, so hopefully a
submission and response is now imminent. Even if only to get shot of me
lol

I shall reveal all shortly. I will liaise with Martin and Bill first though.

Trevor Dann made a good podcast about the two competing Community awards for
Radio Today - check it out!

I can't shed light on this situation Ed unfortunately.

It has been a long journey to get Community Radio reccognised within the
industry as a broadcaster to be taken seriously. We achieved that at the
last Radio Academy 'Regions and Nations awards' where 50% of the winning
stations were Community stations! Having been a judge on the Sony awards, I
can say that we are very much up there with other broadcasting sectors and
that is great and something to be proud of. Indeed, many awards have come
our way courtesy of the Sony Awards and others.

Let's never forget what makes Community Radio different though and celebrate
that, and to reccognise the great contribution that thousands of volunteers
make across the UK. I have always been wary of suggesting that one volunteer
has made better radio or is above any other volunteer as this of course
could have a detrimental effect on what we are all trying to achieve.

Trevor Dann's great podcast about the two competing Community Radio awards
for Radio Today can be found here: http://radiotoday.co.uk/podcast/ The bit
about the two awards is from the 18 May show and starts at 14.30. He also
visits Global which was compulsive listening.

He comes away as confused as many of us are, and quite rightly so, and
almost mocks the fact that we can't get our act together for the greater
good of the sector.

A better consolidated approach should have been made here as this has only
confused many of us and the wider Radio industry. Why was one set awards
announced and then the CMA ones (sorry not the CMA, just the CMA chairman's
with a big nod from the CMA) awards announced the day after??

I think there needs to be a bigger discussion now about how we can really
celebrate Community Radio and how any future awards' initiative can be a
consolidated all singing and dancing affair, that represent the whole
sector.

Therefore, I ask the CMA to find out how this happened this year, and to
suggest how they, as the representative body, are going to consult with its
members on how this can be done in future - maybe an agenda item for the
conference in September.

Dear all,
Fine, but...
I simply repeat my question, which none of the correspondents to date
address: Who can shed light on this situation?

Thanks.

Replying a bit late on all this.

The communityradioawards.co.uk are the ones that I am running, and the
deadline closed at the weekend.

Its (was?) £5 to enter / submit a nomination, we are about to start
processing the submissions and confirming judges at the moment (so if anyone
on the list offered to get involved watch for an email very soon). We are
running a judge led process for a shortlist and then the Gold, Silver Bronze
will be announced at the awards ceremony which is the same night as the CMA
conference (watch this space for details!),

Its worth stating again, that these are not the CMA awards, any whilst they
are 'endorsed' by the CMA, I/We wanted them to be independent and also open
to all CR licensed stations.

Why awards? well through long conversations, stations felt they wanted
them.. I believe the sector needs to shout louder about what great work it
does in its communities, and some stations said that being nomination alone
would be something to help raise their profile in their local community, to
note on a grant application or as part of conversations with advertisers /
councils etc.. I see lots of many and different benefits of the awards, and
aside for "blowing smoke" its truly showcasing, celebrating and highlighting
those involved in community radio and the fantastic work they are doing.

The awards are very different in various aspects, and it wouldnt be right or
fair for me to attempt to compare them, we have been in communication (and
in fact we started that communication) with the other awards, and are keen
to have a dialog with them, we are currently awaiting a reply from our last
email sent to that effect.

We wish everyone the best of luck to those who have entered the awards, and
hope to see lots of you at the ceremony to celebrate community radio.

I heard an interview with the founder of the competing awards to those run
by Martin from CMA. He has tried to communicate and find a middle ground but
was turned away. I almost started another but decided not to before I found
out that there already two. ;-)
