Dear colleague, Last week we held our “Drive to Digital” conference in
partnership with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) at

Over 200 delegates, over one hundred of whom were from vehicle
manufacturers, device manufacturers, dealers and retailers, discussed the
challenges and opportunities for the vehicle industry in growing the take-up
of digital radio. We have been overwhelmed by the positive response to the
event and delegates heard the following on the day:****

** **

**· **Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative
Industries, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to digital radio and
explained why they are pursuing a digital radio switchover plan. He said
Government are working towards a switchover announcement in mid-2013. The
Minister also confirmed Government would launch a certification mark and
that they “*are planning for a launch of the digital radio mark towards the
end of 2012 if appropriate*”. See the Minister’s speech
here<http://www.culture.gov.uk/news/ministers_speeches/8509.aspx>
****

**· **Tim Davie, Director of Audio & Music at the BBC, confirmed the
BBC’s plan to build-out national DAB population coverage to 97% by a target
date of the end of 2015. He also said that by that time the target was to
have 100% coverage of all motorways and FM equivalent coverage on all other
A roads.****

**· **Ford Ennals, CEO of Digital Radio UK, confirmed the launch a
two-year connected consumer communications campaign starting in December
2011. The campaign will run to the summer of 2013 and will be carried over
TV, radio and print media.****

**· **Donnach O’Driscoll, CEO of Absolute Radio, launched two new
digital services; Absolute Radio 60s and Absolute Radio 70s. These new
services now complete the decades line-up at Absolute Radio.****

**· **Paul Everitt, CEO at SMMT, highlighted the growth of digital
radio as standard in new cars over the last year. Registered cars with
digital radio as standard have grown from 5% in Q3 2010 to 18% in Q3 2011.**
**

**· **Stuart Harris from Vauxhall, said that the digital radio *“train
had left the station”* and that Vauxhall was committed to having their new
models with digital radio by the end of 2013.****

**· **Jay Palmer, from the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing
Association, said that his members buy 1Million of the 2Million new cars
sold each year and that they wanted vehicle manufacturers to fit digital
radio as standard as soon as possible. In the future BVRLA members will be
asking for vehicles with digital as standard as they do not want to see
value wiped off their car fleets.****

**· **Laurence Harrison from DRUK said that the future plan for
digital traffic and travel services would be taken forward in partnership
with UK industry, government and World DMB ****

*RAJAR next week*

**· **We will see a new set of RAJAR listening figures next
Thursday. We are currently tracking on a 10% year-on-year growth trend which
would take us to 27.3% digital listening this quarter. ****

**· **To achieve a step-change in digital listening would require a
successful delivery of our 2-year connected campaign, extensions of national
digital coverage and an increase in digital radio in-vehicle.****

** **

*Radio Festival*

**· **DRUK is presenting to the Radio Festival in Manchester. The
session will be hosted by broadcaster and comedian Arthur Smith and feature
interviews with Jarvis Cocker from BBC 6 Music, Clive Dickens from Absolute
Radio, Michael Hill from Radioplayer and Ford Ennals from DRUK. If you want
