Dear All

Interesting
.. very interesting indeed. It also sums up, and backs up
everything that I have been saying on this message board since July last
year ! Canalside Radio is struggling big time at the moment

.
Why ? REASON BEING

= we have been doing this
big society / voluntary / soft touch / nicey nicey for 6 years

.. where
has it got us

 absolutely nowhere.

We need to continue with the work that we do, we must NEVER abandon that

if not on anything else but on a MORAL ISSUE
.. however, we MUST box
clever. We must continue to give people training and offer opportunities to
those who quite frankly may struggle in the media industry, but at least
they can ‘have a go radio’ and enjoy what they do.

We do need to be careful though

.. the airwaves mustn’t be a free-for-all
and we must reserve the right to have the ‘better ones’ on-air and then
apply the rule (damage limitation) at other times during programming. We
have made this mistake, and possibly paid for it at times. We will not
discriminate but we will tread carefully.

This may seem drastic, but our only hope now is to box clever AND get in the
boxing ring on ALL accounts

we need listeners, we need more listeners,
so that this view of the fact that :-

1) No one listens to us

2) We are voluntary meaning that everything is free

3) We are mugs

4) We are a nonentity

5) Etc etc etc :- is blown out
of the water !

I’m sick to death of it

.. I am also going to post something on the
site relating to a ding dong that I have been having with the PRS

..
these characters at the Government / Councils / Licencing offices etc etc
NEED TO MAKE THEIR BLOODY MINDS UP ! AND STOP MOVING THE GOALPOSTS

it is time to stand up and be counted !

I am prepared to let them choose

if they ALL want us to be ALL of
these things mentioned above, then that is fine by me
.. & if you
require all of this from me for free --------- I will willingly give it to
you for free

. CENSUS n’ all

 However, once we have shakin
on it

.. don’t send me any more bloody bills for PRS / PPL / AIRWAVES /
OFCOM LICENSE etc etc etc

furthermore, give each station £10,000 grand
at the beginning of each year out of BBC monies or a community radio fund
and I’ll gladly do all these things for free

.. I’ll also come round
and tidy up, brew up and spring clean.

Untill then

take your census and anything else that you’ve got and
stick it right where the sun doesn’t shine !

That’s my view and it ain’t changing. As of 1st January 2011 Canalside does
nowt’ unless we get a little tickle ! if the group are a local
not-for-profit community group then that is a different story, but when it
is a conglomerate or an institution or a big organisation awash with money,
and they for some convenient reason decide to relate the same old / same old
back to us

.. ‘’OH ! WE’VE SPENT OUR BUDGET’’ then it’s NO
! you ain’t spent any of it on us.

The CMA have their chance now

.. you now have an opportunity to stand up
for all of us

 tell em to PEE-OFF

This is a classic example of if we were operating correctly (these monies)
(so called monies) would be paid to the CMA and then the CMA distributes it
to us.

Have we actually got a voice ----------- ONE VOICE

 singing from the one
hymn sheet for all of us ? at present we seem to be a little higgledy
piggledy, we know what we want, we know what we need but the message doesn’t
seem to be hitting home .. we could get really noticed I suppose stripping
off and all running up Whitehall naked

.. not really one for the
ladies, but the gentlemen would get away with it

. We could tatoo CMA
on our thingys ???

I’ll have The Community Radio Association on mine, hows that ?
er not !

On a brighter note

.. only this evening, myself and some volunteers
have a fabulous time with a load of youngsters who don’t go to school, some
of them are N.E.E.T. as well, and they have had a fabulous time

 I will
do this for nowt’ untill the cows come home ---- that is what we are about

. I’m saying no more on the matter

                                                             HAVE SOME GUTS
AND TELL EM !” for Gods sake and for the sake of all us
.. speak up and
speak out

And before anyone replies with the obvious

. Yes it is a rant

 it’s
meant to be !

I love this Country and I love its diversity, its tolerance and if we can
help this census in someway, then we should

.. but not for absolutely
nothing
.. not even a sausage

.. someone has clearly got something
muddled up er unless I’m the one that’s muddled ?

By the way

we’ve heard nowt ‘ ! regarding the census
.

Regards

Nick

I've been working alongside LA's in our coverage area to help promote
the Census, and although some have committed funds towards a media
campaign, most aren't committing much because of their cuts.

The ONS have (up until the announcement below) said they've committed
all of their media budget on a mainstream campaign, which is why the
local authorities have coughed up some.

I spoke with the ONS Press and Media Office about the announcement
below, as there seemed to be no knowledge of it with the area
co-ordinators. The office also seemed unaware of it - I pushed further,
asking how they intended to use Community Media, and they re-iterated
that they had no budget, but would hope that Community stations would
promote the Census campaign for free as its good for their areas.

The best case scenario here is that some strategy realising that there
are many people who won't be effectively targeted through mainstream
media has been discussed, but not relayed down the ranks.

What I suspect has happened however, is that the ONS have been pushed by
MP's for an answer on how to reach the particularly hard to count - and
responded with 'Community Media'. The answer I got from their media
office underlines a government perception of community media as free,
voluntary, and probably part of the Big Society plan where nothing costs
anything and everyone (but the private sector) works for nothing.

Has anybody heard anything regarding the announcement about an actual
plan, or an understanding of how to use community media?

Office for National Statistics (ONS) is considering the use of
"community media"
to publicise the England & Wales 2011 Census on 27th March.

Lyn Brown (West Ham, Labour):
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office what steps his Department
has taken to ensure that the 2011 Census captures accurate population
data for areas with high levels of (a) ethnic and cultural diversity
and (b) population change.

Nick Hurd (Parliamentary Secretary (Civil Society), Cabinet Office;
Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, Conservative):
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
::::::::::::::::::::::::
The information requested falls within the responsibility of the UK
Statistics Authority. I have asked the authority to reply.

Letter from Stephen Penneck (Director General, ONS):
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
:::::::
Publicity and community media:
-----------------------------------------------
ONS is increasing publicity and communication with a wide range of
stakeholders and the general public. ONS plans to use different
methods depending on the audience needing to be targeted. There will
be a national advertising campaign including TV, press, radio, and
online advertising as well as billboards, and transport advertising
(such as tube, bus etc). Publicity will also be tailored to reach many
target population groups such as black and minority ethnic groups and
young people. As London has a large concentration of these groups it
will benefit, in particular, from this approach.

The publicity campaign will focus on the importance of the census in
identifying the needs of different communities so that local and
national government, and other service providers, can deliver what the
community needs. The campaign puts this principle at the very centre
of all communication and marketing.
