[cma-l] ISP for web streaming?

I'd agree with Alex - we just use off-the-shelf broadband but we are close to the exchange. It is a business package to get the better contention ratio.

We did invest in a decent router (a Draytek) that is very resilient and has lots of features, including ISDN fallback and/or 2 broadband connections, one of which can be a mobile phone dongle. We do use QoS to ensure that the outgoing stream (we use Canstream) can always have sufficient bandwidth whatever the actual conditions are.

We don't stream an ultra high quality signal as it would be easy to have insufficient bandwith under poor conditions - given that most people listen in their cars, on a PC etc. and nobody has ever complained.

(I did see one set up where the guy streamed top quality stereo up a domestic broadband to a local server at a friends house which was also on a domestic set up. He had asked me to look at it as listeners kept dropping the signal!!)

Eddie

I wonder what experiences other CMA member had had with using off the shelf broadband (either business or consumer) to maintain their web stream? I'm concerned that although many ISPs quote an upload of say 2mbits, what does this translate to in practice?
