A Little Local Difficulty?
Is community radio the new ILR?
Once regarded as the home of people who couldn't get a job in 'proper'
radio, volunteer-led community radio has quietly gone from strength to
strength. More than 100 stations are now licensed and gaining recognition
amongst both opinion formers and listeners. Local commercial radio,
meanwhile, is reacting to tough market conditions by broadcasting more
networked programming and abandoning sometimes long-established local
identities (and presenters) in favour ofconsistent, national brands.
Cut-backs and redundancies are all too common.
Join us as we ask whether this heralds the beginning of the end of local
commercial radio as we know it - and if so, whether community radio is ready
and able to take on the mantle.
