the media commentator Robert X Cringely has speculated that P2P will 
become the dominant channel of media distribution in the near future.

with consumer demand for higher bandwidth for technology such as HDTV i 
believe that content distributors will always be playing catch-up in 
terms of network bottlenecks and therefore peer-to-peer distribution may 
indeed be the way to go.

for example, BT retails this Netgem set-top box for only £90 that can 
connect to the internet and download content:

all that is required is for those content downloads to be automated 
(like a podcast) and, hey presto, you can create a community 
broadcasting platform on your set-top box.

combine that with a peer-to-peer technology such as BitTorrent and you 
have a low-cost content distribution channel for community-based content
