+++ Apologies for cross-posting +++
As part of United for Local Television CMA Council urges members across
the community broadcasting sector - radio, web as well as TV - to
support the call for the DCMS to publish a Draft Order of Licence for
Local TV and our parallel campaigns for the introduction of 'Channel 6'
as a new local channel on Freeview, alongside must carry on provision on
interleaved spectrum and cable.
Local public service TV services could be delivered from upwards of 50
locations across the UK. This is becoming an imperative as ITV further
retreats from regional provision. While online services offer great
access to many, the TV in the corner of the living room remains the most
accessible platform for many communities.
All of the above is entirely feasible, but requires government to
recognise that market forces alone will not ensure that universality of
access to local public service broadcasting is sustained. Given the
fragile state of consensus in wider society, the need for clear channels
of creative communication at a local level has never been greater.
Please contact your MP as a matter of urgency to express your support
and to persuade them to sign up to the Early Day Motion number 1013
Tabled by Ian Stewart MP. It reads:
'That this House congratulates Ofcom in finding a means to deliver local
television to every household across the UK on Freeview; and looks to
the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to introduce a licence for
the provision of local public service television during the rollout of
digital switchover'.
Please remember that the fight for local TV public service broadcasting
affects everybody in the community sector. It's about fundamental
points of principle which apply to all of us. We look forward to your
active support!
