Press Release

‘Assembly in the Marketplace’ – Showing on NvTv 15th November from 5pm

A short film entitled ‘Assembly in the Marketplace’ will be broadcast
on NvTv, Belfast’s local television station, this coming Wednesday,
15th November from 5pm. It will be rebroadcast on the weekend
omnibus. The film will give an insight into the work of Caoimhghín Ó
Croidhdeáin, an artist who is currently exhibiting his work at
Cultúrlann Mac Adam Ó Fiaich on the Falls Road.

The film was produced as part of the annual year-long training
programme run by NvTv in conjunction with the Irish Language
Broadcast Fund. NvTv receive annual funding from the ILBF to train
two individuals fluent in Irish. While on placement with NvTv, the
two individuals undertake a comprehensive programme of training
including camera skills, research, post-production and sound.
‘Assembly at the Marketplace’ will be the first piece of work
produced by the trainees taking part in this year’s scheme.

“We really benefited from the making of this programme”, said Ray
Lawlor, one of the trainees taking part in the scheme. “Between the
two of us, we put the entire programme together”.
“I think it is an interesting programme”, said Chrissie Ní Loinsigh,
Ray’s partner on this year’s scheme. “Caoimhghín is a political
artist who really gives you food for thought in his work. But in the
programme he explains how this can be a problem for many artists
these days. Artists are criticised if they don’t use political or
contemporary events for inspiration, yet they are condemned as being
“exploitative” if they do use contentious images for inspiration”.

The scheme in which Chrissie and Ray are currently taking part
started in September 2006 agus will finish in August 2007. It is a
full-time training scheme and the two will continue for the duration
of the scheme producing Irish Language programming for broadcast on
NvTv. Ray is an ex-technician who has many years experience working
in laboratories and factories. He is also part of the Belfast-based
rock bank ‘Tin Pot Operation’. Chrissie is a new graduate who has
recently been awarded with an honours BA in English and Irish from
Queen’s University Belfast. She was a keen radio broadcast enthusiast
during her days at Queen’s.

Ends.

Editors’ Notes

The Irish Language Broadcast Fund
The ILFB aims to train at least 12 individuals on an annual basis
through its full-time training schemes. As well as the two who are
currently engaged in the NvTv programme, there are currently 10 on
placements with companies in the independent production sector. The
ILBF envisage that all individuals trained through its programmes
will add greatly to the independent production sector in the future.
On a wider scale, the ILBF’s main remit lies in supplying high
quality Irish Language output to a Northern Ireland audience. Its
twin remit, into which the training programmes tie, it to develop and
make sustainable the Irish Language independent production sector in
Northern Ireland.
