BBC licence fee to top £130 this year
Jason Deans, broadcasting editor
Monday January 23, 2006
The annual BBC licence fee will top £130 for the first time from
April 1, when the final increase of the current five-year funding
deal is introduced.
From the beginning of April, the licence fee will go up from £126.50
to £131.50, a year-on-year increase of 4.2%.
The government and the BBC are currently locked in negotiations over
a new licence fee settlement, which will come into force from April 1
next year.
In October the BBC made its pitch for the licence fee to be set at
RPI plus 2.3% for seven years from April 2007 - a bid which is
expected to be opposed by the Treasury. If the BBC gets this deal,
the licence could rise to almost £180 by 2013.
