Clive, Yes I agree about the BBC.

I also believe this is true for the commercial stations too. So even when a
significant number of people are listening via DAB, there will be little
commercial sense switching off their FM transmitters. I think we will see
that they will spawn off new commercial brands.

It's quite simply about again commercial advantages on the platforms
(FM/DAB/AM) to reach as many people as economically possible while locking
out as many competitor as you can.

Diverse and vibrant radio industry. I think not.

Kind Regards

Alan

Of course the real aim has been for the big commercial stations to have
equality with the BBC national stations.

I remember some years ago asking a very senior BBC manager if they would
really switch off R1 or R2 on FM, potentially loosing millions of listeners
and he looked at me as if I was mad even asking. And can you imagine the
fuss if the Archers was suddenly only available on DAB?

I don't think the BBC will actually turn off their FM services in the
foreseeable future...

Ian spot on.

It's a buggers muddle!

The problem ALL stations are having with switchover is because Ofcom choose
about 8 years ago to plough on with DAB rather than phase in DRM+ on the FM
band. This allows for 100s of digital stations which would level the playing
field. Also Ofcom hasn't manage the switching to DAB+ either.

One should ask why the big commercial group are so keen now to transition to
DAB? Of course it's purely commercial.

Kind Regards

That's interesting phraseology - written I would suspect by someone who
isn't particularly familiar with the technology.
"......committed to reserving part of the FM spectrum as a platform for
local and community radio stations......"
That isn't what's needed - and what will be the function of the "other
parts"?
"......for as long as it is needed......"
Defined by whose judgement - I wonder?
"......the potential options for smaller local stations to migrate to
digital ......"
Only by a complete re-working of the present mux system - to which I suspect
the big boys will continue to furiously object.
"......the lead up to and after a future switchover......"
Ah - but a switchover to what extent and by whom?
".....software enabling low cost low power DAB transmissions....."
Nothing mew here - been around for at least 5 years.
".......which has been successfully trialled in Brighton......."
Really? - Are we aware of what happened and the results?
Ian

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what support her
Department is intending to give to small local radio stations in connection
with the introduction of digital broadcasting.

++ Edward Vaizey (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Culture,
Communications and Creative Industries), Business, Innovation and Skills;
Wantage, Conservative)

Government recognises the importance of local commercial radio stations to
the communities they serve and is committed to reserving part of the FM
spectrum as a platform for local and community radio stations, for as long
as it is needed. My officials are also working with Ofcom to consider the
potential options for smaller local stations to migrate to digital in the
lead up to and after a future switchover. We are very encouraged by the
recent research Ofcom has carried out on software enabling low cost low
power DAB transmissions, which has been successfully trialled in Brighton.
