Since January, twenty postgraduate students from the School of
International Development (DEV) at the University of East Anglia have
been working with their local community radio station ‘Future Radio’
as part of the DEV module in Media and International Development.

Students have been helping the station to become more sustainable,
promote citizen journalism and better meet the needs of the North
Earlham, Larkman and Marlpit (NELM) community. Students presented the
results of their work to the station manager, Tom Buckham, on 17th
March.

Each week students travelled to Baseline, a drop-in centre in the
Marlpit area of Norwich, to work in the community with staff and
volunteers from the station. Future Radio is part of ‘Future’ a
community based charity working with young people and adults in NELM.
Future Radio aims to promote freedom of expression and the
dissemination of information for the benefit of the local and wider
communities.

This collaboration between UEA and Future Radio was set up by a new
lecturer in Media and International Development, Martin Scott and
colleagues from a London based media and development organisation, New
Media Networks.

This collaboration was enthusiastically supported by DEV and by Cue
East, through its Small Expenses Fund.
