[comradio-l] TOGETHERNESS

Professional Fund-Raisers don't have to be salaried.

As with advertising, they could be paid on the basis of a percentage of what they raise - but only when it's in the Bank!
That way they cost nothing to use and they have a built-in incentive to be successful!

Hi

Well done to Karl and his team at 209radio and really hope they continue beyond March 2010. Sad news for Forest of Dean Radio and few other stations who are facing closure, however at CMA last AGM we suggested a Regional Fund Raising Officers who would ensure all Community Radio's in their region would at least have core costs covered ensuring survival.

12 Highly qualified fund raisers would demand an high end wage, but this is possible if all stations agree to use funds from Ofcom (500K per year), rather then each station applying for themselves. Together we are all in this world of Community and radio, together we can survive and thrive, just a thought.

I don't think we are doomed - no.

But what is relevant is that there is no apparent correlation in dealing with funding sources and many CR stations do not have access to adequate business acumen.
We currently have three stations out of the 27 we have facilitated which cannot pay their way and we are seriously having to consider removing vital components still owned by us in order to safeguard our own business.

Dear Karl,

I am delighted that your immediate funding problems have been answered in such a spectacular fashion... and I do hope that the national, regional and local media will make a big deal of this. I also hope that your long term funding questions are answered.

However, I'm a little concerned that your immediate funding crisis was not made clearer amongst the CMA members / CMA List prior to this time. I would hate to get an e-mail telling me that the highly regarded 209radio had closed down. Everybody in the CMA / Community Radio sector would.

But reading between the lines of this last minute, temporary success, it appears that we were all faced with a disturbing fact.

CR001 (Forest Of Dean Radio) is due to stop broadcasting on New Years Eve due to funding problems.

They were not licensed as number 1 for nothing!!

This dreadful fact asks a couple of pertinent questions...

Is this sector in crisis?

Or are we all doomed?

Where is the TOGETHERNESS of our sector?

Kindest Regards
Steve Suttie
