*PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*

*Reprieved! Community Radio Station saved at the very last minute.*

*The deadline was **midnight** on Monday the 30th of November* to gather the
£28,000 needed to keep going. *Faced with imminent disaster*, the weekend’s
programming was full to bursting with shows calling out the appeal and
giving what might have been their last shows. Meanwhile a team of
fundraisers battled against the odds.

*At **11pm** only £14,000 had been pledged but a call came shortly after
then from the station’s saviour who came in with the remaining £14,000.*

The mood of the 200 people there switched immediately *from despair to
elation. *Broadcasting went past the midnight deadline as the champagne
could be opened in victory rather than as a toast to defeat. The cheering
could be heard at the other end of the car park!

209's Station Manager, Karl Hartland, said of the night:

"You couldn't write it; 5 minutes previous to the last minute phone call, we
were preparing to say it was all over. 30 minutes later I was surrounded in
the studio by euphoric and cheering people. It's like a dream but we all
know that the hard work starts now. We must ensure we have a future."

Huge amount of support and good feeling had been arriving at the station
during the weekend. The membership would like to thank all the donors,
everyone who sent messages, and in particular Cambridge City Council and the
Social Enterprise charity Citylife, who have been constant supporters.

Clare Blair, City Council Executive Councillor for Community Development
said: “209radio has always provided an invaluable service for Cambridge and
it is excellent news that they have managed to raise this money. I hope
this is the start of a new and more secure future.”

*209radio will now be changing its name to Cambridge 105, with a launch
event in the New Year. *

*All donors will now form the first set of a new group of formal patrons,
The **Cambridge** 105, who have clearly shown dedication to the **Cambridge*
* Community and its volunteer-run radio station. *

The news means that the station can now operate until the end of February.
It will be working towards sustainability and strength, and developing
partnership with a raft of people and organisations who have pledged skills,
time and knowledge.

*The 209radio Lottery will also continue*, with the chance for someone to
win a cash prize in the on-air draw at 6.50pm on *Thursday the 17th of
December*, just in time for Christmas!

*Photographs of the night accompany this release.*

*Notes for editors:*

*209radio is **Cambridge**’s non-profit, volunteer-driven Community Radio
Station, *broadcasting on 105 FM and on at http://209radio.co.uk

*The Cambridge 105 Club* is a new group of supporters and patrons who have
come together for this appeal and will go forward as a major public
fundraising engine.

*This new group has 3 levels:* Friend (donations over £400), Member
(£700-£1000) and Patron (£1000+).
