Spring into Action on World Environment Day

World Environment Day (WED) is commemorated each year on 5 June to
concentrate worldwide attention on the importance of the environment and
stimulate political attention and action. In support of International
Polar Year, the WED 2007 focuses on the effects that climate change is
having on polar ecosystems and communities, and the ensuing consequences
around the world. This year, the host city for World environment Day is
Tromsø in Norway.

Closer to home, World Environment Day coincides with 'Spring into
Action’, a British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) campaign
that promotes environmental volunteering. The campaign is delivered
through hundreds of one-day events across the UK, offering everyone the
chance to get involved and look after their local environment.

The CMA and the Community Channel are leading a ‘Spring into Action’
broadcast campaign in partnership with Community Radio Stations in
London, the North East, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber. The
broadcast campaign has a particular focus on volunteering and this week
runs alongside 'Volunteers' Week', a national celebration of volunteers
and volunteering.

Yesterday West Hull Community Radio did an excellent interview with Rt
Hon Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Education and Skills about
Volunteers’ Week. The interview with Alan Johnson is available for
download and rebroadcast on the Spring into Action website:
