The voices of Sheffield

SHEFFIELD LIVE! hit the airwaves on 87.7FM in time for with a series of
shows geared around International Refuge Week. You can also pick them up
on www.sheffieldlive.org

A daily debate programme in the morning and a cultural programme in the
afternoon are the corner stone of the programming co-ordinated by various
refugee communities.

Run by media centre The Drum, it was also the voice of some of Sheffields
most popular festivals and provided a platform for many local bands to get
their music heard.

The Drum has already trained a number of refugees and asylum seekers who
will be helping manage the running of Sheffield Live!, the station that
will broadcast on 87.7FM from June 17 until July 13.

Sangita Basudev, chief executive of The Drum which is based in the former
National Centre for Popular Music, said: Sheffields refugee community
rarely get the opportunity to tell their side of the story. Sheffield Live!
will give scores of people the chance, not only to tell their side of the
story, but also tell Sheffielders about their own culture and the issues
affecting their lives through music, storytelling and plays.

The Drum is working in partnership with the Northern Refugee Centre to help
organise local events for International Refuge Week which runs from June 20
to 26.

Sheffield Live! is set to broadcast from three festivals - Sharrow, Heeley
and Parson Cross - and Ponderosa Carnival.

Through Sheffield Live! you will hear many different voices, accents,
stories, music and languages Says Sangita We give air space to local
musicians, bands, DJs, composers and writers. Sheffield Live! brings you
the sounds of a lively and diverse City and fights to break down the
barriers of stereotype. Listen and you will hear a City that reflects the
voices, sound and the music of the world

Sheffield Live! is supported by the Home Office Challenge Fund.
