Polly Parrot here again talking about one of my favourite subjects. I wish I wasn’t talking about it and that the ‘problem / issue’ would simply go away or dare I say the powers that be did something to help the matter go away.
It has become the general chit chat of late that our ‘’’signal’’’ in the Local area is at best so/so and at worst absolutely c r * *
Just to re-run the tail again …. in a nutshell, we were awarded our licence in 2006/2007, we set off with our 25 watts in 2008 ----- it’s never been brilliant, but we were half getting away with it ---- then Mr Ofcom licenced Heart and there were a couple of others who had changes to name and power boosts ---- a number of whom are on 102.8fm they definitely ‘’’peck peck peck’’’ at us.
Those familiar with the local area and familiar with my ramblings will be aware that there are a number of issues here issue number 1 is the fact that you can hear us in Macclesfield when in a Vehicle, but interference, pecking, hissing, squishing, farting, burping is now par for the course inside a building is not possible and unless on the internet then the democratic choice is taken away ……………. Out and about, not so bad if you are listening to Milk and Alcohol by Dr Feelgood or The Boys are back in Town by Thin Lizzy but when Matt Monro is trying to sing the soft ballad from my Fair Lady, I’ve grown accustomed to her face it doesn’t quite bode well. In fact we’ve changed the song title now to I’ve grown accustomed to the glitch there are even mini fuzzes in places like Tytherington / Hurdsfield / Adlington / Kerridge / Rainow all within our MCA some only a mile and a half from our transmitter.
In times of desperate need and struggle and strife we need to be able to at least compete a little bit even though apparently ‘’’competition’’’ is a dirty word. Actually I forgot, that isn’t quite right :- according to the original rules that I believe are still in place (unless I have missed something?) Commercial Radio is permitted to compete with us, but we ain’t permitted to compete with it ? this can never be right, especially in times of hardship, lack of central and local government funding and a general drop in grant allocation unless of course you are organising a sponsored run, a yoga class or something arty farty.
I would argue that one of the fundamental needs required by a radio station is to be heard …….. it is becoming difficult as systems in place are NOT moving with the times. Here’s that wonderful word again ‘’’common sense’’’ common sense tells us that if Stations are licensed on a frequency those nearby on an adjacent frequency need at least to be considered.
We’re still here, we’re bobbing and weaving, looking forward to going to Melton Mowbray at the weekend to all the wonderful folk I have met along the way and of course to eat all the pies ---- although some folk may argue I have already done that 😊 but alas things are the toughest they have ever been and yes the sympathy card is out again as I believe ‘’’we’’’ are getting kicked from all angles …. Lack of general funding both central and local, a general malaise on sponsorship as the internet and social media takes hold and 25 watt transmitter that quite frankly I could throw the signal further with a catapult and a pee-shooter.
The Greased Pig has just been let off down the slope out of trap 7, he has already just passed red, blue, green, orange, yellow and black/white greyhounds and is about to hurtle past Franz Klammer and Ingemar Stenmark, he is being closely followed by the Bailiffs, the Sheriffs and the High Court enforcement officers ….. was motoring so quickly went straight past the soup kitchen.
The chequered flag and the proverbial pee pot await at the bottom of the slope.

I think it is worth noting and acknowledging though that the average income of s Community Station appears to have dropped over the past 10 Years by 65% - 70% this isn’t good in any books ….. we know the reasons why and we know a few solutions which wouldn’t break the Bank nor cause problems to others but sadly Mr Ivory Towers ain’t listening, if of course we are at all putting the questions in the first place ---- I am starting to have my doubts as 1 + 1 is making 3 at the moment.
See you at the weekend ………… a nice scoop or two as well in the Anne of Cleaves all welcome Matt Hancocks is buying the first round, we could also create a float and bar tab if any money is left from the first £8 Million gobbled up for the so called Community Journalists ? is someone havin’ a giraffe with that ? they don’t exist, they’re working for money making rackets using tax payers money. It’s a con trick the best way to improve local news and not have fake news and have it real is to have local people TALKING on-air to folk they know and folk they know of real people with faces who folk can relate to. They can hold them to account because they see them in their own neighbourhoods.
It’s like the white elephant I pointed out 5 years ago ---- TV thousands wasted. Community Radio in this Country could be leading the World by now if the Government had backed the right Horses, instead they have left it to fester and/or struggle on. Some Stations have closed, others are close and the majority it is a struggle.
The authorities are 80% responsible for our woes, time they manned up, stood up and admitted it and took it on the chin and then do something about it.
