[cma-l] cma-l Digest, Vol 99, Issue 16

Agreed Phil, the cost can be judged against potential increase in the lifespan of equipment. When I was Business Systems Manager of a certain large broadcasting corporation the received wisdom we worked to when evaluating the cost-benefit was that in the 10-40°C range, reducing the temperature of equipment by 10°C would typically lead to a doubling of lifespan of temperature sensitive parts (electrolytic capacitors in particular).

The effects of temperature on failure rate of presenters is a tougher calculation!

Worth noting though that efficient as the modern units are, it is just when the temperature outside is only a couple of degrees different from that inside that they work at their least efficient – CoP typically falling from 3+ to 1-1.5.

Alex

I think alex's concern about running cost is valid, however, when the outside temperature is just a couple of degrees higher than the desired inside temp, then it hasn't much work to do. The cost of running can also be offset against early failure of overheating equipment (and presenters)
Also, Modern units are very efficient, and can be set to heat as well as cool.

Air con in the studio is a must! We've installed two split air
conditioners in two different studios and would never be without them.
Keeps the equipment and the presenter at a constant temperature - vital
for top performance, and so easy to install. If you can use a spanner
and a screwdriver, it's dead easy.

Purchased through CPC supplied by the air conditioning centre, less than
?500.00 and completely silent. You'll never regret it. Any advice - just
contact me.

I agree with you about the desirability of keeping the gear cool Phil, but what about the electricity cost? Have you assessed that?

When I last looked, a small split conditioner in typical circumstances would cost at least ?200 a year run, possibly double that. Worth bearing in mind the efficiency of the chosen air conditioner, as its electrical cost could easily outweigh its purchase cost in a couple of years.

I hadn't thought about electricity cost. Thankfully we're in a good
position where we don't have to worry about power usage - which is
good given the amount of units we have (4 studios plus talks room) all
of which are old and almost certainly power hungry compared to newer
units!

Worth considering if you're on a meter though!

Phil n' all

We work out of the old Clarence Mill in Bollington //// like a fridge in Summer and a freezer in the Winter. We're looking to install heating in the Studio not air con ? saves on bills I suppose. I just ask Presenters to turn up in six woolly jumpers
