[cma-l] Radio Festival 23rd May 2017

This thread highlights precisely why community radio is the poor relation
to the rest of the industry, in my opinion. Bill posts details of an event
and instantly people whinge about the costs of attending and what the
subject matter is. Not one person thanks him for the information,
approaches this with an open mind, or appears to even consider going.

The Radio Academy (disclosure: I was an elected committee member) puts this
event on to help the radio industry. Conferences like this (I run Next
Radio, and am involved in Radiodays Europe) don't make money. They are
mainly a labour of love by the organisers, or organised to bring the
industry together because that would be a good thing.

For community radio folk to respond to this mail with an effective message
of "f--off" is disheartening and shows why this sector is rarely taken
seriously.

Put up, or shut up. Don't raise two fingers to organisations wanting to
include you in the industry, and then simultaneously complain that you're
not treated as part of the industry. That's a moronic, childish attitude. I
am frankly amazed that people like Bill keep bothering if this is the
thanks he gets.

And, for the record, I'm currently working on the speakers for Next Radio
(in London, on September 18th). If anyone from community radio has anything
good to talk about, please get in touch with us at next.radio - we'd love
to hear from you. If you feel the need to whinge about that one, too, then
please know that almost every single talk from Next Radio is available,
free, on the website at http://next.radio - something we do precisely to
help people, and something that helps wipe out any profit we might earn
from that event too!

Positively,

James
