Dear All

I have just sent a very positive upbeat e-mail to (Rhys – Cardiff) (re:- afro carribean news update) we have a Reggae Show and a lot tuned into it twice a week …. It is Presented by a 69 Year old pensioner who originally comes from London … Trish is a real true cockney …..quite fascinating as well she isn’t afro caribean she’s white british …. Must be the only one in this category in the Country !! :) unless someone can tell me otherwise ………so we’re up for a bit of that

……………..with reference to this Grant application AVIVA malarkey you each and all know my feelings on it ……..complete total and utter waste of time and effort, and pointless, and dare I say WRONG !

Of course grant funders are permitted to put whatever rules they wish to these grants, I just wish someone would have a word in their ears to educate them.

This isn’t sour grapes, it is just a reality check. For example, I have got more chance of becoming Prime Minister than Canalside has of getting enough votes to win an award. We are in a semi rural area … (in fact if you look carefully at our broadcast area)(and this is another argument as you know) some would argue = RURAL so we will never ever ever have enough numbers voting for us … it doesn’t mean we are not worthy of the monies. I would argue that the ones (apart from a couple) really struggling now are the smaller rural Stations.

We did this once and got beat by a Brass Band and a Boy Scout Group :)

The whole process is a farce, and I have pointed it out before. Some could argue that not any one system or process is 100% true, but some are more sensible than others …. This is just plain daft, and my concern is more and more are going down this route which is very worrying for us. We will possibly be breaking the rules this year on 50% and all the other baloney so we’ll have to cross that Bridge when we come to it and dig in ….. why ? how come ? because basically we have lost our Council Funding and we haven’t received one grant not a sausage ……….we have been victims of our own success and lost 8 Volunteers to employment and moves up the media ladder (which is good and should be celebrated) but alas, leaves us in a pickle and a double whammy …..our volunteer hours go down and thus less to off-set against 50% rules.

Perhaps the time has come now anyway for the likes of us here at Canalside to say ‘’balls to it’’ roll the sleeves up and av a go …. A bit like the shambles with the PRS/PPL. If you want a job doing properly, do it yourself.

Each Day that goes by I get increasingly frustrated and more angry about the whole unfair manner in which ‘’’things’’’ operate --- and here’s yet another.

At least with a Panel of Judges, they can make some kind of reasonable decision as to whether one project is more worthy, better planned, better delivered as opposed to which gets the most votes. We’ve got something as serious as life or death for Community Projects now being run as the X Factor. The mind boggles !

No doubt I am Mr Nobody crying in the wilderness again …however I will nail my colours to the mast yet again and state ‘’I bet quite a few of the ‘Big/Bigger/Larger’ Urban Stations will have a pop at this, where as the likes of us and the other also rans won’t bother’’ ‘’prove me wrong if you can, betcha can’t’’ arrogant perhaps ?? factual ? I would imagine yes, and once again only pointing out what everyone else is thinking.

I believe the CMA should contact a lot of these grant funders and at least make them aware, as they could as with most people in this big grant/community funding cocoon that it is plain daft and wrong.

Another 20 minutes of my time wasted on stating the b l e e d I n’ obvious.

No worries of course for Mr BBC man at the Conference, he’s nice and cosy in his Ivory Towers and happy to take the whole 8 Million and leave us with nowt ….. he said so, coz I asked him if you remember

Ending on an up --- lots of positive things going on here and in the fraternity as a whole, which is good and should be celebrated and long may it continue --- problem is, there lies the problem … it possibly won’t as everyone is running out of money and the light at the end of the Tunnel is getting dimmer.

Adios

Professor H Dumpty / Chairman Moaning Society of Great Britain
