>I think the question I would ask is that given that none (as far as I can
tell) of the shortlist of ‘30 people under the age of 30 who are tipped to
be the industry’s next generation of talent’ appear to be involved in
community radio how representative is this list?<

There were quite a few involved in community radio in previous years (I
judged all years except for the last one). However, they were also involved
in professional radio, too; and I'd suspect that only the professional
radio bit was 'visible' in the announcements.

I suspect I'd have found it difficult to argue that someone who is only
involved in community radio (at whatever level) was deserving of a place.
The awards are there to spot people who'll go far in the industry, and I
think it would be hard to choose someone who hasn't actually got a paid job
in their chosen industry. It isn't a "very nice people" list, it's a list
of people who are going to be the next Bob Shennan, the next Jeremy Vine or
the next Ralph Bernard (or whoever - you get my point). If you're not
already working for Global, the BBC or Bauer by the time you're 29, it's
hard to see how you're deserving of the accolade of being in the
30-under-30.

Perhaps the wider discussion is why community radio seems so invisible to
the wider radio industry.
