[cma-l] Community Radio Fund & the CMA

One of my many issues with the fund is that (as far as I am aware) it only
covers 1 year costs not a 2 or 3 year project (or member of staff) which
for anyone that has considered it or done it, its really hard to get
someone in and to sustain their own role in 1 year.

Thats why personally I would shy away from assisting new stations, in
theory new stations are full of volunteer resource, funding etc to get them
going (if not and if they are struggling from the start its going to be a
hard uphill process).. I would say if anything the funding is needed the
most after year 1, when all that initial funding and resource starts to
fade.

I also see why splitting it up would be a great idea, and whilst I agree a)
I am sure I saw a point from Bill that ofcom said that wouldnt be allowed
(however if loads of stations put a joint bid in they would have to at
least consider it).. and b) it then becomes a sustainment fund (getting
smaller and smaller as more stations join) at least in its current form it
as the opportunity for stations to get some development going.

Its that old saying of give a man a fish and he will be fed for the day, or
teach (and give the stuff) for the man to fish and he will eat every day..
although I personal prefer the terry pratchett version. '*Give a
**man a fire and
he's warm for a day, but set fire** to him and he's warm for the rest of
his life.*'
