The CMA is delighted to have received so many responses to the Community
Media Sector Survey 2016. Our thanks go out to over 100 organisations who
took the time to complete the survey and share details about how they
operate. The responses will help the CMA to support its members more
effectively, and inform the conversations it regularly holds with DCMS,
Ofcom and other stakeholders. A summary of the findings will also be made
available to CMA members, who may find the data helpful as they talk to
local councils, businesses and funders about the work that they do.

The survey reveals a lot of detail about how people are coming together in
local groups to create media that inspires, informs and improves their
communities. It tells the story of countless hours of dedicated
volunteering, financial hardship, and social gain in very diverse
organisations, widely spread around the UK. Many are working in deprived
areas, and building bridges every day between disparate sections of their
local community. They provide training and support, both formal and
informal, and are a reliable source of high quality local media content.
Many are run entirely by volunteers, yet are able to deliver a full time
service of high quality, local media content.

The motivations behind the work they do are as diverse as the organisations
themselves:
- To promote music that wouldn't otherwise be played on mainstream media
- To give local people a voice and to link isolated communities.
- To promote Scottish music and culture
- To provide a radio service that dares to be different
- Giving a voice to people who are seldom heard
- Provide community news, information and platform for discussions along
with Punjabi music to promote social inclusion and cohesion
- To experiment with radio as an art form
- To enable individuals to gain skills which increase opportunities, with a
particular focus on transferable skills that help them move towards
employment
- To encourage individuals to find their voice and have their say

The CMA will be publishing a report later this year.
