[cma-l] CMA radio sanctuary campaign suggestion

Surely it's better to stand for something rather than nothing?

By not highlighting and talking about these issues is doing nothing. You may as well put the station into automation and play another Coldplay track.

Alan

PS Nothing against Coldplay ;)

I saw that too Darren - and I was equally concerned at the lack of response - but unfortunately that tends to be the British attitude.
Don't get me wrong - I am fully supportive of CR being closely involved with social themes - but as long as what it does is productive and doesn't just fuel the fire.
Terry also has a good point - supporting authorities with encouraging reporting of unsavoury matters.
I would hope that all CR stations invite Police to take part in programmes and get their message out.

Completely agree,

I don’t know if anyone saw the video of the man on a tram in Manchester yesterday but what saddened me more that the attitude of the young people who were hurling racist and xenophobic abuse, was the amount of people who stood facing the other way and decided it wasn’t their problem.

It’s been four years since I was involved in running a community radio station but I still speak to many stations and support projects that work with the community radio sector. My understanding of the reason community radio even exists is that it gives a voice to those who may struggle to have one in any other way, and supports community understanding and cohesion. If ever there was a time that was needed, it’s now. The police have a job to do, absolutely, but CR has a much wider reach and could produce some content that pre-empts the issue rather than responds to it.

I always think back to a show I produced with a group of volunteers which looked at the similarities between the beliefs of a variety of communities in the area I worked and was broadcast at the same time as a visit from the English Defence League, it wasn’t popular with everyone but it certainly got some people thinking.

I’m not as involved in the sector right now, but am still an active advocate for it. I’m not one to start an argument (ok, sometimes I am), but I think this is an amazing idea that could really make a difference. But more than that, I think CR has a responsibility to address issues like this, otherwise what differentiates you from your local commercial station. Good luck with the project and I’ll keep an eye out for opportunities to help.

Darren

Community media is a place to serve underrepresented communities – surely supporting these particular communities now is a positive move that will also make it clear to observers what makes community media unique?

I may be misunderstanding Mike’s email (apologies if I am), but I don’t think we risk turning listeners into ‘bigots' by broadcasting a message of support and solidarity?

I’d also argue that community media can support authorities with encouraging reporting of unsavoury matters. Perhaps now is the time to invite police etc to take part in programmes and get their message out.

Cheers,

I must agree with Ian. I've always been of the view that to talk about a problem can be the creation of a problem ever since I winced when an external youth worker, from a city centre, came to a club where I was helping, started talking about glue-sniffing which was a problem we had not encountered at our club. Fortunately the problem was not created but I thought it was irresponsible. The laws exist to deal with these unsavoury matters so the authorities are the place to which these should be reported and not the airwaves.

I may be thought of as an old cycnic here - but are we not making a huge fuss about something that we at this level can do absolutely nothing about in terms of a ensuring a positive outcome?
Are we not in danger of aggravating the problem by keeping up the publicity?

We have plenty of evidence through programmes and stations run by and for these communities over a long period of time but now I think it is time to shout out more about this.
