We’ve had one or two over our 12 Years of fun who we have had to get shot of for various reasons -------- they fell under the category of ‘Clowns’ they also happened to have the mentality discussed earlier ‘’you can’t tell/ask me to do anything because I’m a volunteer’’ crazy misguided folk who you are better off without even if it means you only have a few volunteers left.

It is really strange ……….. we have a small team here now .over the years we have had less, but we have also had lots --- it varies. The current team though have been steady Eddy for the last 5 years, and it’s Monkeeeee Magic

"Workers" is my favourite - busy bees, and a better connotation than "drones"!

Hi Ian

Everyone will have a different view on titles, as is evident on this thread, which is fine.

"Team" is exactly right for us. It also take out the "I" (read "I am . . ."). We are a group of invidivduals, but we very kuch work together here as a team.

We don't use "amateur" as it doesn't fit us. The point was made earlier, that a "ham radio amateur" is far from amateur. I agree. I've held an amateur radio licence for the best part of 40 years.

It is just using the right word in the right circumances.

Sorry Nigel - but I hate the term "team" with a vengeance.
We are in a very serious commercial business - not a kick-about ball game.

There is a popular (if rather coy) saying - "There's no "I" in team".
We don't consider ourselves a team - we're all practised exponents of our own skills who don't have to rely on the "support" of others to do what is required.
Hence we have our own version of that saying - "There's no "f" in team"

(say it quickly and you'll get the message)

Why?
Because it's so unprofessional - it doesn't really give anyone any confidence.
And it's too vague - about as useful as "a member of the public".
Yes - most of us do what we do without payment because we see a need and we want to fill it - but surely we don't all need to wear the same arbitrary label?

Hi Ian,

Why do you say 'volunteer' is an awful word? I don't understand your point volunteers effectively managing the station - isn't that the norm for community radio? That there is no paid staff and it's run by volunteers?

I think we all appreciate your sympathy and advice Lucinda, thank you.
In terms of a potential Licence terms breach - we always advise that Ofcom is formally notified as soon as anything untoward happens - and then they can respond to any complainant that they are aware of the problem.
The volunteer situation is far more complex and there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution.
Management is the key - closely aligned with good commercial practice and sound financial common-sense.
We see far too many potentially good CR stations where the volunteer (awful word) aspect effectively manages the station - and a camel/committee situation is the result.

Dear All,

Like many of us, I was saddened to hear the announcement that two community radio stations switch off their transmitters this week. This is a tragedy for the residents of both Spalding and Cheddar, who have lost vital opportunities to have their voices heard, and experience the joy of community radio as both participants and listeners.

The CMA very much wants to help in these situations - but we can't unless we know what is going on. As someone put it to me today, we don't have an alarm in the CMA batcave every time a station is in trouble.

It may sound obvious, but please let us know how things are for you. For example, if someone has made a formal complaint to Ofcom and you may be in breach of your licence, how you handle the next steps can make a huge difference. If you find yourself in this situation, phone the CMA office straight away, or email Bill and ask his advice. He has helped many licensed stations through these kind of problems..

If your issue is volunteers then please contact me directly, using the chair at commedia.org.uk <mailto:chair at commedia.org.uk> email and I will find time to have a chat. Whether you have too many volunteers, not enough, or just the wrong kind, there will be a way through the situation.

While I'm here I'd like to congratulate both Tulip Radio and Pulse on their achievements over the years. I'm sure that their impact on their local communities will have lasting effects, even if they are not still around to broadcast about it. I wish all their staff, directors and volunteers well with whatever they do next.

Lucinda
