*Cultural Heritage – The memory of our past, the key to our
future.International Citizen Media Award 2017 honours creative film and
radio producers*

Europe’s cities and landscapes are marked by physical memories of the past.
Castles, bridges and archaeological wonders are some of the most
quintessential examples. Traditions, languages and art passed through the
generations of people shape our everyday lives. Because cultural heritage
is so central to Europe’s identity and due to the grave threats it faces in
conflict zones, the European Commission considers that the time is right to
celebrate cultural heritage in 2018 and to declare that year to be the
“European Year of Cultural Heritage”. The aim of this year is to together
share our common cultural heritage and its potential for identification,
participation and development. Three aspects shall be discussed in this
context in particular: cultural diversity, demographic change and
sustainability. Thereby the “European Year of Cultural Heritage” in
particular will build on the fact that our common cultural heritage is
always both: local and European as well as memory of our past and key to
our future.

The topic of the 2017 Citizen Media Award was chosen parallel to the slogan
of the then just mentioned upcoming year. Citizen media make people from
all over the world more sensitive for a global association and an active
engagement. With the announcement and choice of topic the supporters and
sponsors of the Award want to inspire citizens to produce and broadcast TV
and radio products concerning the topic “Cultural Heritage”.

Thereby, the focus is on the topic, the quality of the medial
implementation, the authenticity, the pertinence of research and the
originality. The characteristics of the productions get adequate
consideration by the jury.

The winners of the International Citizen Media Award will be awarded on
Saturday the 6th May 2017 in the Citizen Media Centre Bennohaus (Münster,
Germany). The award show will take place in the scope of this event.
Private producers of non-commercial audiovisual products have the chance to
send in their submissions in the categories video and audio until the *28th
February 2017*. A jury of experts in radio and television will award prize
money up to 700 €.
