[cma-l] Breakfast Show

Hear Hear Cat ..... And SPOT ON ..... mis-management is not the major
problem. I personally think mis-management accounts for about 10% tops and
that's being generous :-

You have hit the nail on the head with most of your reasons .perhaps we
could add to that The Circus / The Debacle (wait for James's comments) :-)
unnecessary administration, red tape, restrictions, going round in circles,
asking the same questions showing the same concerns for 12 years are also
other irritations that manifest themselves in the belly up exercise.

I work 75 hours a week and get paid for 40, and the money I receive
certainly wouldn't allow me to retire to Prestatyn let alone the Maldives,
so we need to all calm down before lobbing round mis-management accusations.
A few of our other valiant chaps Brian / Scott etc get a little tickle but
go up and beyond the call of duty ..so ????? I would imagine a lot can
relate to this.

If anyone walked up to me and said I/We had mis-managed this place, the
first thing I would do is punch them on the conk ! it would be not much
short of a complete insult and definitely wrong.

Circumstances, lack of support from folk who ought to be supporting you and
bureaucracy are the main issues that cause problems. My heart goes out to
those who have in themselves done everything correct but have gone belly up
owing to these matters.

Chin up, soldier on and then RISE LIKE A PHOENIX from the ashes.

God forbid . but, if this place did go belly up, I still think I would be
stood here with an arrow through my hat under the 'aka' of DJ General Custer
:-) none of us would change it for the World 'would we' ????

Nick

I'm getting sick and tired of hearing people whitewashing failed stations as
mis-managed.

We worked 155 hours a week between my partner and I to keep the startion
ticking over. Volunteers had constant training and guidance but in some
cases were only interested in doing their two hours and leaving again. We
probably ran our station at the worst point of the recession when businesses
saw radio advertising as a luxury/gamble, even at a local level, so refused
to spend any money on it. We also found that local authorities were happy
for someone else to launch a station but wanted to do little, even free and
in kind, to help get the message out to a wider audience and help ensure the
station's future.

It was never mismanagement on the stations side ... it was complete apathy
and selfishness in the local community we were trying to serve.

The stations that survive the longest are those who are already subsidised
by someone with the capital to invest in the project (because it's their
passion/toy) and those that don't have to have to fund premises or
transmission site rates. Even our minimal budget was too high in hindsight.

We learnt a great many lessons from trying and failing, but at least we
tried and now I share that experience with the stations I work with on a
consulting/engineering basis - proud of what I achieved in the past.

Oh - I was surprised about that. Stations have closed because they have
been mismanaged, not necessarily because they didn't ask their presenters
for money. Like I said, we don't do it, and we cover our costs fine.

Just out of interest how much do you charge?

No, what I meant was that without presenter contributions the station would
close. Like a lot of others already have. Their contributions have made up
the operating loss each year and they unanimously voted for that rather than
closure

I think Gary means if you pay your daytime presenters, you're more likely to
get stability in your output, which leads to the station being more
attractive to advertisers.

Works for us, anyway ....

It's got sod all to do with ethos and everything to do with financial
survival

I'd much rather be in the position to pay key presenters (breakfast &
drive), rather than ask them for a contribution! I guess it boils down
to the ethos of your station. Quality presenters will hold on to, and
build an audience which appeals to advertisers. Asian Star have always
worked that model and they have been very successful. They also taught me
how to run a station .... which I am now applying at Wycombe Sound. Thanks

Some stations also successfully raise money to keep the station going by
making a small charge per show for volunteers to present the programmes.

Not putting myself forward for this (sorry) but I did wonder what a
"community radio show rate" is?

We pay our presenters a small fee for the shows between Monday-Friday
7am-6pm, and I know other community stations don't.

Dear All,

We are looking for 4 to 6 weeks cover of our breakfast show 5 days a week
7am to 10am is anyone able to help?

Starting next week.

We do pay a community radio show rate for this, it would suit someone quite
local to Heathrow as we are based in sunny Slough :)

If you are interested then you can contact myself or the station manager on
info at asianstar1016.co.uk

Kind Regards
