[cma-l] quiery ?

Playing devil’s advocate for a minute….

While I’m sure that all of these proposed syndicated programmes are excellent in themselves, and will have great production values, content and “listenability”, I’m a little uncomfortable with the concept.

I’m sure that when we all put together our original proposals, bids, business cases or whatever, the key messages we were focussing on included “locality” and “uniqueness". “MyTown FM” etc. We also talked about giving presenting and volunteering opportunities to our local community, widening access, and presenting the listeners with a real alternative to the “usual” national and regional programming fodder.

Whether you’re a regional community radio station who’s raison-d’etre is to focus on the community in a specific geographical area, or a community-of-interest station which focusses on a specific cultural community, the idea of nationally-syndicated shows doesn’t really chime with that original ethos. Are we “getting too big for our boots” and trying to become something that we were never intended to be? Is there a danger that by introducing more syndicated content, we risk losing our identity and becoming the very thing that we’re trying to avoid/supplement - just another one of the “national local” stations?

Personal opinion is that syndicated shows are useful, but we should be regarding them as a filler or temporary stopgap for situations where we can’t yet generate our own content - even if it isn’t quite as polished!

Discuss.
