Valid points here Terry lad
.. I do think however you have got slightly
(only slightly) the wrong end of the stick.

I think it is mix and match. You are always going to just get those who wish
to do a show. You try to encourage them to do other things, but they don’t.
I suppose you do end up going a bit squidgy in the middle and letting them
get on with it, whilst you do the Donkey work on top of your other Donkey
work.

Our place is such a mess at the moment, it looks like Steptoes yard
 it’ll
be the same three trying to tidy it up, with our normal tasks still to do,
and going home at 10:30pm at night.

Sadly what happens is I like you get wound up, frustrated, angry etc but
then the little light goes on in my head
. I ask myself ‘’what is my main
task here’’ my main task is to try and provide a service for our
Community / Volunteers / Pretend Volunteers / Presenters / Work Experience /
Local Clubs, Organisations and Charities the list is endless
.if I have
to go through the graft to provide it, then my conscience is clear when I go
to bed at night. We have put a smile on hundreds of folks faces over the 11
years
. They never dreamt they would ever be on Radio.

Some would argue that technically you are allowing yourself and one or two
others to get walked all over ..that’s maybe true, but I have been told by
the Big man in the sky that under the rules of incarnation, I am actually
coming back as a Carpet, so this is my training period LOL :-)

When Glyn said own agenda, I think he just meant ‘doing a show’ - we
have a format and Presenters are supposed to be sticking to it
.. one or
two do try to swing the lead, but they have to be up before their breakfast
to catch me out, I don’t miss a trick.

On the second one, I never meant straight generic imaging INSTEAD OF I
meant AS WELL AS even if this was just one sweeper that said
‘’Canalsides The Thread 102.8fm is a member of the United Kingdom Community
Radio Network’’ ‘’for further details contact the CMA on bla b la bla
or www. Etc etc

That’s all

.oh and by the way yes we are a network, and if we had
operated like a proper network as opposed to some operating in the ‘’I’m
alright jack category’’ we would be a lot further down the road than we
are now. If folk had listened to some of my suggestions and implemented them
we would be flying now, and many of the things APPARENTLY being announced in
favour of us in February (I’ll believe it when I see it) would have
happened 4 years ago.

For example, one absolute classic case

the Community Radio Fund.
Everyone receives the same, you are all then on a level playing field, equal
and batting on the same team
you then tackle the Government head on as a
proper group and get more money in the pot. It might only be another
£500,000, but it’s better than nothing. They know they will never have a
battle on there hands as long as some are getting nowt and others are
walking off with £30,000 which has happened and it is NOT acceptable.

We’re stronger together, and I mean properly together and not a talking
lip-service shop.

Hang in there guys we shall overcome

Nick

Hi

I have spent some time reading through some of the threads here and my
temperature is rising slowly as my anger threshold gets closer. Two points!

1.Presenters With Their Own Agenda?

What are they doing on your station in the first place and more importantly,
why do you allow them to broadcast in the first place?

It doesn’t matter if they are volunteers! Just because you don’t pay them
does not give them the right to use your station to broadcast the little
radio station in their heads.

Solution! Get them to sign a voluntary agreement that says they follow the
station format/guidelines designed by you - The Station Manager (you have
got a written station/programmes format
 don’t you?).

If they don’t sign this agreement, they don’t get within fifty yards of a
mic. If they do sign and break the rules then
 you can wave goodbye and
replace them with someone who will follow station direction
simple!

Presenters on air with their own agenda = weak programme management.

2. Common Station Imaging Across Community Radio

NO NO NO. We are NOT a network and when we start to think we are
 we move
towards our own downfall!

Think individuality, creativity and innovation.

Terry Doyle
