Ian, you know how to provoke a debate don't you? And you might guess that I disagree with you.

I think it's all down to the student. If they have the determination to make it, then they will. We've had some students go on to great success at Radio's 1,2,4,5,6 and local radio across the UK. We work with Radio 3, Radio 4 and commercial radio and our students do find jobs. Since we added Spark to the mix that has gone through the roof. Those who choose not get involved in work experience, perhaps unsurprisingly do less well.

You also need to remember that teaching is a skill as well. You might have a highly experienced industry person in front of a class but if they can't teach, then the students will learn nothing.

Community Radio is a great training ground, as is student radio or hospital radio but a degree can only add to the skills that you need to succeed in this industry. I've not been in the 'industry' for many years, but I'd like to think I'm up to date and able to enable students to build the skills they need in the real world.

I'm sure any one of us would welcome you to come and see what we do

Regards

Richard

I wonder at the value of such courses.
The question that worries me is - how good and up-to-date are the people who are instructing?
It's the old adage I'm afraid that those who can - do - and those who can't - teach!
I can see a student spending a lot of time and money on a course - and coming away with knowledge and information that's of very little practical use in a career in real down-to-earth gritty broadcasting>
Please - show me I'm wrong?

Hello,

Do you know of Universities courses, media, radio or music technologies, which as part of their courses, ask student to find year long placements in Radio?

So far I have only come across the University of Huddersfield, but if you know of any other courses and course leader please let me know.

Best,
