*10 Years 24/7 in the Community*

The South’s leading Asian and ethnic community radio station, Unity 101
Community Radio <http://unity101.org/>, will be celebrating its 10th
Anniversary over three spectacular days. Southampton-based station’s
celebrations will reflect its decade of successes and its positive impact
on community cohesion and diversity across Hampshire.
The three days of celebration, taking place in January 2016, will be the
biggest diversity and achievements celebration that Southampton will have
ever seen.

As an independent voluntary organisation, Unity 101 has gone from strength
to strength since its humble beginnings in 2005. It was one of the first
community radio stations in the UK to be awarded a permanent community
radio licence from Ofcom. Ofcom said:

“Community radio stations provide a new voice for hundreds of local
communities across the UK. Fuelled by the hard work and enthusiasm of
volunteers, they reflect a diverse mix of cultures and interests and
provide a rich mix of locally-produced content".

In 2012, Unity 101 was recognised at the highest level, with the Queens
Award for Voluntary Service for “promoting community cohesion via a
multi-lingual broadcasting service". Its three-day anniversary spectacular
will start off with an evening of certificates and awards at The Hub
Theatre, Southampton City College, recognising the achievements of the
station’s many volunteers and local organisations who, like Unity 101,
strive to promote community cohesion. Special guests on this night will be
Councillor Linda Norris, The Mayor of Southampton, Khurshid Drabu CBE,
Former Judge and Founder of Muslim Council of Britain, Dahlia Jamil from
WEA and chair person of Art Asia, Jo Ash, Chief Executive, Southampton
Voluntary Services.

This event will also see the launch of Unity 101’s 1st Community Award
which will recognise fourteen local people who has selflessly worked to
improve community relations across Southampton on a voluntary basis.

Guests will be treated to welcoming food provided by Sanjha Event and
Catering, Papa’s Pop Corn, Hampshire Chocolate Fountain and wine plus soft
drinks by Booker Cash and Carry Eastleigh. An array of colourful
entertainment will include Indian Semi-Classical Dance by Dalia Pathak,
Belinda Academy Dancers, Rivaaj Fashion Show & The Unity 101 Group.

Day two will be a live music concert at the New Central Hall, St Mary
Street, reflecting the ten years of music broadcasted on Unity 101’s
airwaves. Ram Kalyan, Unity 101’s Project & Station Manager, has confirmed
the 5.1.5 Crew, the UK’s finest Asian 5 piece band including Chirag Rao and
Shama Shah, with special guests the Canada-based Qawwali singer, Shahid
Abbas Khan, Navin Kundra, the Brit Asian hit maker who has performed for
the British Royal Family at St James’s Palace, and Punjabi pop songstress,
Sazia Judge. The newly formed Unity 101 Community group will also perform
and food will be sold by Sanjha Event and Catering & Papa’s Popcorn.

And on the 10th day of the month, Unity 101 will celebrate its 10th with a
special Dinner and Dance at the Southampton Novotel. At this black tie and
traditional wear event, invited guests will enjoy a three course feast
cooked by Wham Bam Tikka, entertainment will be provided by a comedian, The
Unity 101 Group and Southampton Kandyan and Bharata Natyam Society dancers
and followed by an evening of dancing to Bollywood, British and ethnic
music by DJ Pav.

The three celebrations are sponsored by Southampton Solent University,
Hampshire Fire & Rescue, Eastern Arts Beauty and Bernard Chill & Axtell
solicitors.
