Zane Ibrahim, Bush Radio’s former Managing Director from 1996 to 2010 and
the man who led the station through some stormy and great times, has sadly
passed away (Link<http://bushradio.wordpress.com/2014/05/19/zane-ibrahim-23-june-1941-to-19-may-2014/>
).

Zane had a long-standing association with the Community Media Association
and with the wider UK community radio sector, and spoke at the CMA
Conference in Bath in
2012<https://soundcloud.com/communitymedia/microphone-and-big-heart-zain>
.

Known as the 'father of community radio' for his role at Bush, Zane was
also an anti-apartheid activist and an award-winning journalist. He
travelled the world sharing his knowledge and passion for community radio
and helped to set up projects in developing and war-torn countries.

Zane co-founded Bush Radio in 1992, at first broadcasting illegally after
being repeatedly denied a broadcast licence by the apartheid government.
Despite initially having its transmitter confiscated and staff arrested,
the station persevered and is still broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days
a week since 2006.

Run mainly by young people - with nearly half the programmers women - and
broadcasting in three local languages (Xhosa, Afrikaans and English) Bush
Radio serves the communities around Cape Town and in particular the
townships of the Cape Flats.

Its mission statement includes a commitment to ensuring that "communities
who have been denied access to resources take part in producing ethical,
creative and responsible radio that encourages them to communicate with
each other, to take part in decisions that affect their lives, and to
celebrate their own cultures".

More than just a broadcaster, Bush Radio also counts community "upliftment"
projects, scholarship and training programmes, and personal development
schemes among its many activities and the project will remain a lasting
tribute to Zane's memory.

It is to Zane that the following phrase is attributed:

*"Community radio is 90% about community and 10% about radio". *
Zane was an inspiring ambassador for community media and a passionate
advocate for positive social change. He will be missed by us all.
