This is a bumper DRM newsletter and you should not miss it! News from
India, Brazil, South Africa, from recent events like the ABU General
Assembly, information about new SW DRM broadcasts and good contracts signed
in north Africa, all just below.

While you read and share the DRM news, do not forget to register for the
November 18th webinar aimed mainly at India. And if you are interested in

Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union General Assembly, Vietnam

Last month in Hanoi, Vietnam, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU)
held their 50th General Assembly and associated meetings. DRM Technical

*DRM Webinar for India*
DRM are to hold a special India DRM Webinar (“DRM- Extra Features and
Benefits – A better Choice for Listeners”) on November 18th in conjunction
with ABU. You can use your computer's microphone and speakers (VoIP) or
call in via phone to get the presentations and ask questions  or join in

*DRM Consortium to demonstrate DRM Emergency Warning feature for India’s
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in western India*

The DRM Consortium is to demonstrate the Emergency Warning Features of the
DRM system at a special event hosted by NDMA in Gujarat on November 22nd.

The special session DRM – Disaster warning system is to be held on the
final day of a four-day event to be held at the Gujarat Institute of
Disaster Management, Gandhinagar (Gujarat).  Presentations will made by
Alexander Zink, Fraunhofer IIS ,  Radu Obreja, DRM Marketing Director, and
the Hon Chair of the DRM India Chapter, Yogendra Pal.

Those present will include senior officers from NDMA Gandhinagar  and
representatives from nine coastal states.  The session will also include a
technical demonstration of how emergency alerts and information can be
broadcast and managed using the DRM Digital Radio system.



DRM – International spotlight on the robust Early Warning Feature

The Emergency Warning Feature is an important feature of DRM. The DRM
digital radio standard is the only global standard to work in ALL frequency
bands (both AM and FM), and there is growing interest from many governments
of large countries where communication to the people during an Emergency is
becoming an increasing priority.  Click here

recommendation on Early Warning Features

Brazil –Digital radio debate continues

At the beginning of November, the Brazilian president signed a decree
encouraging the voluntary migration from AM to FM (band 1). This has also
become part of the debate about digital radio in Brazil, as Marcelo Goedert
discovered at the 22nd AGERT Congress - Southern Radio and TV Broadcast

*Brazil – Early reactions to the AM Migration decree*

Daniel Slaviero, President of the Brazilian Association of Radio and
Television Broadcasters (ABERT), is interviewed by Radio World

*The World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) Brazil
Conference*

DRM will feature in the presentations and debates at the second
International Spectrum, Society and Communication Conference, which this
year is to be dedicated to the topic of digital radio. The event,
co-ordinated by Telemedia Laboratory Department of Computer Science at
PUC-Rio (the prestigious Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro) in
partnership with AMARC Brazil, will be held at PUC-Rio, November 26th

Owners of 80 stations want DAB switch halt in the UK

A consortium of 80 commercial radio stations in the UK has released a joint
statement calling for the digital radio switchover timetable to be set by

“Small Scale DAB” promoted by Ofcom

In order to address some of the concerns of the stations represented by
those above, in August 2013, the UK regulating body, Ofcom released a
report by their employee Mr Rashid Mustapha on the test of a DAB
transmitter for local coverage.  It is called “small scale DAB” and it is
based on a test in Brighton using lower-cost components. Read

DRM+ is ideal solution for digitising smaller radio stations

The DRM Consortium fully supports a switch off date for the UK and other
countries like India or Brazil. It is of the opinion that the added
spectrum and power efficiencies offered by the existing, trusted and
already ITU recommended DRM+ solution, could be the answer for the smaller

DRM developments on Shortwave

*KBS WRN Broadcast*

On October 27th KBS, the largest public broadcaster in South Korea,  began
a one-hour daily transmission in German using WRN transmitters based in

*Télédiffusion d’Algérie to renew their Longwave station in Tipaza*

Télédiffusion d’Algérie (TDA), the national broadcaster of Algeria, are to
replace their 1.5 MW longwave transmission system located close to the city

*Guam - More KTWR DRM tests*

KTWR have been conducting further DRM tests with their new TX7 (a Thomson
TSW-2250D).  The tests ran from 5th - 6th November 1500-1530 UTC   (15445
KHz azi 285) and from 7th – 8th November  1500-1530 UTC   (13760 KHz azi
285). They are particularly interested in reports from India.  Read

*Big Florida Shortwave Station to Reopen*

Shortwave station WYFR in Okeechobee, Florida, which ceased transmissions
on June 30, 2013, is to resume broadcasting in December as a result of an
agreement between Family Stations, Inc., and Radio Miami International,

Changes at the top

*New Director General of All India Radio*

At the beginning of November Mr R. Venkateswarlu  took charge as the new
director general of All India Radio (AIR), one of the world's largest
broadcasting stations. According to a statement from AIR, R.Venkateswarlu
has an experience of 35 years in the Indian Information Service and has
served AIR, Doordarshan and Prasar Bharti.

*Frontier Silicon’s Patrick Hannon elected President of WorldDMB*

The DRM Consortium would like to congratulate DRM Executive Board member,
Patrick Hannon, VP of Corporate Development at Frontier Silicon (a Toumaz
Group company),  for his recent election to the position of president of
World DMB.
