Greetings,

I would like to invite you to a free conference which is taking place at
2pm on Thursday 14th November. The event will take place at Fulwood Academy
in Preston and will be an opportunity to hear about the findings of an
exciting project which has been taking place in Preston and across the
country over the last year called Connect:Transmit.

Connect:Transmit was funded by The Paul Hamlyn Foundation to look at and
evaluate how the listening and speaking skills of young people can be
improved by working with local community radio stations. The project was
co-ordinated by Radio Regen in Manchester (one of the longest established
and most successful community radio projects in the UK). Community radio
station, PrestonFM was selected as one of four project partners in the UK
to deliver this project alongside community radio projects in Norwich,
Bradford and Aberdeen.

Working with Year 9 pupils at Fulwood Academy and Archbishop Temple High
School, PrestonFM used community media practitioners (DigiEnable and The
Yellow Factory) to work with the schools to develop radio shows, hold
discussions on community issues and increase their presentation skills. The
findings and highlights of the project were launched at a National
conference in Manchester earlier this month, and now we are holding this
event to specifically focus on the Preston element of the project.

The event will start at 2pm with a buffet and networking before an
afternoon of workshops and presentations. The event will end with a panel
debate (involving the young people who worked on this project) which asks
the question “Should 16 years olds be able to vote?”.

We expect this to be an exciting afternoon and to investigate ways in which
schools could embed media, and in particular community media into their
work. We would love it if you could attend, if you can then please follow
the link below to book your ticket:

else who may be interested*

Many thanks,
Liz
