Just another oar, from another of your Council members.

My first comment concerns OfCom - the regulator. If they want to regulate, then they should do so. They should not allow anything to be broadcast that the society at large consider unsuitable. That's the first huge hurdle we need to overcome. How does that happen? Retrospectively punishing radio stations will not help. Perhaps a secure Internet site where (suitably vetted) listeners can listen, and then vote - it would need to be a statistically suitable number. If it passes, then it can be broadcast. The Lord Chamberlain can rest peacefully. Unfortunately administrators feel they have to keep interfering - it ensures they keep their jobs.

There is no watershed in radio. Do we need one? I doubt it.

Should we allow anyone to broadcast whatever they like? I suspect they will do so anyway without being afeard of  legislation.

What is the way forward? OfCom licensed stations should be restricted by legal, honest, decent and truthful. What is the problem? Don't we know what each of those words mean? If we don't then there is an army of lawyers out there willing to help us. A couple of judicious withdrawals of licence, and a court case will help.

Beyond all this is the society that we want. Does some idiot swearing or mouthing unsuitable language deserve an audience? Couldn't they be shamed into joining the world that the majority need? There's lots of ways to apply pressure.

By making a fuss we increase their audience share. Instead spend your breath presenting alternatives, and don't forget comedy is a great leveller.

I just bought a pink Smart car - now trying to decide what anti-clarkson jibe to stick on its back (I just happen to believe he is one of the worst cultural icons we have). It's a small gesture but...
