[cma-l] BBC RadioPlayer launch announced - and HD Radio too!

Hi,

Given than services like Canstream can provide at least a basic streaming package for around about £300 per annum I'm a little perplexed as to how a similar figure could be justified, just for 'placement' on the Radio Player?

After all, surely they will just be relaying our own web streams (which we already pay for in most cases), so where is the annual cost (for the BBC) with regards to having each CR station listed?

There are some obvious benefits at being listed, such as the potential to engage with new audiences, but if the cost is too high the benefits will be outweighed in my opinion.

In terms of our own views, overall we probably would pay a fee, but given that the average BBC local station operates on budgets 50x greater than the average CR station, I'd be a little resentful and I don't think the figure should be that high, if at all.

Tom

Dear all

Licensed community radio is part of Radio Player but we are still negotiating with them on the fee to be charged - they will not let our sector be on Radio Player for free. Figures bandied about are £300 per annum. We are trying to get them to just charge an initial set up fee, hopefully less than that amount as once you are on there is no particular reason to charge on a ongoing basis. We are also discussing with them a much smaller fee anyway for RSL holders.

We do think Radio Player is a good idea for our sector to be on but I am sure you would agree the price has to be right, given that the median income for the sector is around £69,000 (Ofcom last Annual Report).

The Player has not actually been launched yet, just the preview at the Radio Festival yesterday. We will keep you posted re any developments.

Best wishes

Jaqui

Looks like we're already on board:

More than 400 national, local and community radio stations are to be
streamed by a new online radio player, in an initiative involving the
BBC, Guardian Media Group and Global Radio.

Jaqui will be able to provide further information about this.
