We're definitely interested in this, but how do I convince my committee that
it's worth £300 per annum for what is effectively just an online portal? I
wouldn't call it a small charge - it's as much again as our main streaming
charges! If the Canstream stations all signed up it would be around £30,000
a year.

All the other big media guides, such as:

. WindowsMedia.com Radio Tuner,
. iTunes,
. E-Radio UK,
. RadioFeeds,
. Reciva Portal (radios from Acoustic Energy, Revo, Roberts, Magic, Tesco,
DMTech, Tecknics, Goodmans, Grace, Lenco, Sangean, Sanyo etc),
. Frontier Silicon portal (radios from Bang & Olufsen, Bush, Denon,
Goodmans, Grundig, Hitachi, JVC, Onkyo, Philips, PURE Digital, Roberts,
Sanyo, Sharp, Sony, Teac, Yamaha etc)

and so on are all entirely free. Why should there be such a substantial
charge for the BBC one?

Also are you sure about the implications of advertising. I realize it may
not count towards the Ofcom limits on broadcast revenue, but I think we may
still have to count it for music royalties - we have to report all income
directly derived from the availability of the online stream. On our own
website this is no problem as all advertising is general to the site and not
specific to the stream, but we couldn't say that was the case for
advertising on the Radio Player.
