Hi Gary,

Felt compelled to put in my tuppence worth in here..

I think it is absolutely right that community radio station managers be paid
the equivalent public sector rate (although I take my hat off to stations
existing without paid staff!)

I don't think it's correct to draw a parallel between a small commercial
station manager and a community station manager - from where I'm sitting the
roles couldn't be more different. The day to day management of an FM
broadcast (if we were indeed holders of a CR licence - maybe one day) would
surely still play second fiddle to the support, development and
encouragement of local people who are involved in running the station, who
may well have issues and face barriers to this kind of activity (that is, at
least, our ethos).

Certainly if we had a leaner more commercial approach with a focus on
station output rather than on providing a wide range of volunteering
opportunities for all walks of life in the community then we could perhaps
function without the paid staff who bring the expertise in community
development / youth work / advocacy / training / etc. I am certainly not
decrying the staff-less model, however I think that it would be much more
difficult for us to be as truly inclusive as we are, without paying for the
expertise to help enable this and ensuring that the rate of pay is at least
on par with an equivalent public sector post.

Cheers

Tam
