[cma-l] Bitrate for digital broadcasting

I saw this today written by Roger Bowen on Media UK in a discussuon on the viability of DAB:

 

128kb/s/112kb/s is simply not enough using DAB. You could get away with that bitrate using DAB+ with its superior codec, but DAB needs a minimum of 192kb/s to get near FM quality. After all, the powers that be are trying (unsuccessfully) to persuade people to change their current FM listening habits to DAB on the main stations. How are they realistically going to do that by almost abandoning a world-wide format for a substitute that once you’ve overcome the trickier reception, you have a result that is less pleasing on the ears, and requires more power to receive?
