Arts Council Enquiry into the Arts and Heritage

An enquiry into the funding of the arts and heritage was announced
recently by the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select
Committee. The Committee has stated that it wishes to investigate the
following:

* The impact of recent as well as future spending cuts from central
and local government on the arts and heritage at national and local
levels

* The measures that arts organisations can take to work more closely together

* What level of public subsidy for the arts and heritage is necessary
and sustainable

* Whether the current system and structure of funding distribution is
the right one

* The impact recent changes to the distribution of National Lottery
funds will have on arts and heritage organisations

* Whether the policy guidelines for National Lottery funding need to be reviewed

* The impact of recent changes to bodies of the Department for
Culture, Media and Sport. In particular the abolition of the UK Film
Council and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council

* Whether businesses and philanthropists can play a long-term role in
funding arts at a national and local level

* Whether there need to be more government incentives to encourage
private donations.

UnLtd - Learning in Communities Award (England only)

The social enterprise charity UnLtd is working alongside the National
Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) to support the
engagement of adults in learning.

The Learning in Communities Award is for up to £5,000, and will be
given to a project that engages adult learners (18 or over, or if
under 21, having been out of full time education for at least 3 years)
in a regular learning activity. However, the project must not:

    * Be part of the applicant’s paid employment
    * Involve political or religious campaigning
    * Involve activities outside the law
    * Involve employing people other than the applicants involved to
carry out most of the project work
    * Be used mainly to achieve academic qualifications
    * Be used to fund living expenses.

Individuals and informal groups are eligible to apply. Applicants must
be over 16 and living in England, and must not be applying on behalf
of an established organisation.

The Award will be open to applications from 1 September 2010.

Natwest Community Fund (UK-wide)

Nominations are open for the Natwest Community Fund, which aims to
support local charities across Britain. Both customers and
non-customers of Natwest are allowed to nominate a local charity, and
can do this by submitting their nomination either online or through a
local branch.

The money awarded from the Community Fund must be used to benefit the
local community. The money cannot be used to pay the bills of a
charity or project. The charity/project will have to provide details
of how the money will be used if they are shortlisted. Additionally
evidence of how the money has been spent will need to be provided
after the awards have been made.

The deadline for nominations is 20 August 2010, and the voting period
