Job Description


Job title 	Business Development Officer
Salary		£21,306 p.a. pro rata 1st April 2009
		SCP 25

Reporting to 	NMFM Station Manager

Terms		3 days per week (22.5hrs per week)
		1 year fixed term initially*

Closing Date	10am - 9th October 2009
Interviews	14th October

* This post will be initially funded by a 1-year grant through the
Ofcom Community Radio Fund. It is however intended that the post
should be self-funding and that the contract will be extended beyond
the fixed initial term subject to performance.


Background

North Manchester FM (NMFM) is a brand new permanent community radio
station which delivers 24/7 broadcasts to the communities of North
Manchester. NMFM has secured funding through the Ofcom Community Radio
Fund to appointment a part-time Business Development Officer to help
increase the station’s revenue and develop local outreach projects.

NMFM is a locally owned Community of Interest Company governed by a
Board of Directors, employing a small staff team and engaging around
100 local volunteers who participate in our broadcasts. The aims of
the station include training people in new skills, increasing their
self-confidence, improving their employment prospects, promoting
social cohesion, and promoting local services. The post will be based
at purpose built studio facilities within the Manchester College who
are also a key funder to the station.

The BDO post is crucial to the sustainability of NMFM and to embedding
the station into the local community. The BDO will develop
multi-agency partnership work with local organisations and agencies,
with the aim of generating revenue income and delivering projects that
further the aims of the station.


Key tasks

1.	To develop business opportunities for NMFM in line with the aims of
the organisation as a
	community radio station.  Specifically:

•	To generate revenue and business opportunities for the station

•	To work with mainstream agencies and other groups to develop projects that use
	community radio to improve service delivery to the local community

•	To secure on-air advertising, NMFM promotional opportunities, and
sponsorship to local
	businesses

•	To develop relationships with local media buyers

•	To liaise with other station staff regarding the development of new
projects e.g. public
	consultation and training, radio activities and broadcasting
information campaigns

2.	To work with the NMFM Station Manager to appropriately promote and market the
	services NMFM can offer e.g. engaging with appropriate organisations
and networks,
	attending events to represent NMFM, producing promotional materials
including the
	creation of a Media Pack.

3.	To liaise with staff and/or the station team as required regarding
the production of audio
	material for advertising campaigns.

4.	To develop funding applications with guidance from the Station
Manager and identify
	project opportunities to develop consortium bids

5.	Conduct extensive outreach work with local agencies and establish
links in the community

6.	To liaise with the NMFM Station Manager regarding the placement of
service delivery
	projects and the scheduling of advertising and sponsorship campaigns.

7.	To produce reports for the NMFM Station Manager, Board of Directors
and funders as
	required.

Person Specification

Skills/knowledge

1.	Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

2.	An understanding of the regeneration agenda, including knowledge of
relevant groups
	and agencies.

3.	Excellent organisational and project delivery skills.

4.	The ability to translate client needs into appropriate products and
services that can be
	delivered by NMFM.

5.	The ability to manage a programme of work and prioritise tasks
without supervision.

6.	Proficiency in use of Word, Excel and Powerpoint software packages.

7.	The ability to work co-operatively with members of a team.

8.	Knowledge of the NMFM target area - desirable.

9.	The ability to use Adobe Audition software package and Myriad
system - desirable.

station and its clients.
