A FREE and open public discussion on what it means to be black in
today’s Britain is to be held this Sunday afternoon (October 4) from
3:00pm – 5:00pm at The Globe @ Hay, Newport Street, Hay-on-Wye, HR3 5BG.

*Exploring Contemporary Cultural Experience* at the Globe art gallery is
aimed at both young people and adults.

It will look at historical and contemporary culture from black
perspectives in Britain and abroad using storytelling, PowerPoint
presentations, recorded music, film excerpts and an interactive discussion.

The hosts are two acknowledged experts in the field, the freelance
writer, DJ and broadcaster Marva Lord and Dominic Rai, artistic director
of the Man Mela British Asian theatre company.

The event will begin at 3pm when Marva and Dominic will introduce
themselves and ask the audience what they know of black culture and history.

Marva, a Jamaican Canadian now resident in Britain, will look at the
origin of Black History Month and talk about the great black singer and
civil rights activist Paul Robeson and his links with Wales.

She will also discuss the different perceptions of blackness in various
parts of the world.

People present will share in a discussion about black heritage and
culture in Britain and in the wider black Diaspora.

Dominic, recipient of the 2006 award for contribution to the arts from
the All-Party Parliamentary Group Panjabis in Britain at Westminster,
will talk about his work in British Asian theatre and his plays looking
at the contribution of Indian soldiers in World War One.

There will be a presentation from a production he directed, Across the
Black Waters, based on the classic war novel by Mulk Raj Anand.

The free event is sponsored by the Globe, Black Voluntary Sector Network
Wales (BVSNW) and the Arts Council of Wales. It takes place from
3:00-5:00pm at the Globe in Newport Street, Hay-on-Wye, HR3 5BG.
