The making of 209 radio:

Cambridge Community Radio station 209 is celebrating a birthday this
week: it’s been broadcasting on FM for two years. To mark the
occasion, Alice Ryan of the Cambridge News meets Karl Hartland and
Lucy Clifton – the couple who created 209.

"If you stand in this corridor long enough, you’ll see every walk of
life in Cambridge go past,” says Karl Hartland, with a grin. “But
that’s the beauty of community radio: it really does bring everyone
together.”

Karl is standing in the corridor which runs the length of 209 Radio –
from the reception through to the studios.

Tens of people walk the corridor every day, from music buffs and chat
show hosts to the homeless and people with mental health problems.

And all are part of what Karl and his partner Lucy Clifton call “the
209 family”. “It really does feel like a family,” says Lucy.
