[cma-l] Grants for Grass Roots Groups in England, Scotland and Wales

“Under funded and under represented” community groups are set for a
£10.2 million funding boost.

Through their new Strategic Funding Programme, the Equality and Human
Rights Commission (EHRC) is making three-year grants worth £450,000
available to voluntary and community organisations across England,
Scotland and Wales.

The fund is aiming to support groups that deliver much-needed services
in their local communities, especially those that try to promote
community cohesion and tackle prejudice.

Funding will be allocated towards two priority areas:

    * Providing guidance, advice and advocacy services in key areas
such as: health; education; social care; employment; and business
advice.
    * Promoting good relations, cooperation and increased
understanding amongst diverse communities.

A third priority area – support for legal advice and awareness of
legal rights – will be funded through a stand-alone programme expected
to launch in June.

The fund is open to applications from charities, not-for-profit
groups, community interest organisations, and other third sector
bodies, providing they have an unrestricted income of less than £6.5
million.

Applications are made via a two-stage process. Interested groups
should initially submit an outline proposal before the 12 June
deadline. Shortlisted bidders will then have until mid-September to
work on more in-depth applications.

Launching the new fund, Sir Trevor Phillips, chair of the EHRC, said
it was vital to support “under funded and under appreciated” grass
roots organisations.

He explained:

“In tough economic times, people who are on the sharp end of
discrimination and inequality are more in need of support than ever.

“Community organisations that give people skills, support and access
to opportunity play a vital role in keeping communities together,
building the strong, prosperous and inclusive Britain we want to see.”
