Up to £6.6 million is set to be pumped into promoting volunteering
across England over the next two years.

The Office of the Third Sector has revealed that plans are in the
pipeline for three new funding programmes.

Up to £2 million is being set aside to pilot an Access to Volunteering
Fund which will aim to break down the barriers preventing disabled
people from participating in volunteering.

A further £3 million will be allocated to third sector support group
Capacitybuilders, who will run a new training service to ensure that
volunteer managers have the relevant skills and experience.

The final programme will see the establishment of a £1.6 million
“volunteering legacy” for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Youthnet and
Volunteering England will be asked to work alongside the charity V to
help find suitable opportunities for people inspired to volunteer by
the Games.

Announcing the new initiatives, Third Sector Minister Kevin Brennan said:

“These programmes represent a significant investment in volunteering.
They will help more people to volunteer and will provide vital support
to those that manage volunteers.

“The new programmes are particularly important now as volunteering
organisations are reporting that more people want to volunteer to gain
new skills and improve their employability.”

Mr Brennan hopes the additional investment will build on the money
already being spent on encouraging volunteering, such as the £117
million to support youth engagement by V, the £8 million made
available to create volunteering and work experience places for the
unemployed, and the £5.5 million Generations Together programme, which
is aiming to forge closer relationships between the old and young.

Organisations interested in managing the new Access to Volunteering
programme should email the Cabinet Office on
